cooling

I would like to upgrade the cooling system and the two options I have encountered so far are:
1. Muzzy aluminum fan $40
2. a second electric fan mounted to the right of the stocker. $50

Obviously both would be great, but if you had to choose which would you think would be the best investment.

BTW I will also be removing the floor mat that KHI drapes over the motor and the foam plugs under the side fairings to improve air flow around the motor.

I have never had a problem with cooling in 4+ years but if you were going to do something from the above choices add a second fan.

you can also switch to a zx10 front fender. it will aid in the cooling quite a bit.

Never went above 5 bars on my 08. For a lot of guys, that is a .cooling problem. I kind of like it especially when the temps dip below 40.

My 08 seemed to run a bit cooler after the ceramic coated full system was installed.

From what I have read here the 10 fender is the best cool down mod.

Thank for all the ideas. I never would have thought about the fender.

As far as my bike having problems- I noticed there are VERY few bikes on here which are still stock as mine is thus far which I believe also plays an important role in the efficiency of the motor and heat. So of course you're not gonna have the problems I have. I'd like to free up some moola this year to get to those things but it's not looking good at this point.
thanks again, I'm gonna start with another fan on a switch ( I too, like the warmth when 30degree days come) and see about the zx10 fender.

As far as the fender goes, what years does that include?

The heat Doenst bother me with good ankle boots on much. The only time I had a over heat was in 90+ Vegas at long stop lights I would shut the moter off then let the fan run while I waited to start & go.

perspective has everything to do with this topic. After doing all of the above myself, I came to the conclusion IMO it's better to run hot than too cold. The 10 fender conversion has the biggest results by far. I ran that for awhile and went back to stock. I have a stock radiator fan on the right side in addition to the other currently. twin fans turn off and on automatically and I use the 4 way flasher rewired as a manual switch which I like better than a Muzzy fan choice. Very few bikes have had a bad water temp sender unit early on. Thats very unlikely but worth testing. My results and a few here hold that there's nothing wrong and it's not as hot as you might think. ignore the gauge more often?

I like the fan on the switch option just for that reason. I too have heard peoples doubts about the actual accuracy of the non-descript electronic gauge, but when I've got five hundred pounds on the bike in the middle of summer and I just come off the expressway to sit in bumper to bumper traffic my crotch tells me exactly how hot the bike is, and that's a lot hotter than any bike I have ever ridden hot with a gauge with actual numbers on it! The bike starts to ping under acceleration from a stop at that point, also. I think it could use some selectable backup cooling measures.

both, 04-07 zx6, zx636, and zx10, you can get the brackets for them from Two Wheel Werkz. You can also fab up your own, but I just got a set from Two Wheel Werkz saved me a bunch of time and headache, and they are nice, plus they have two different holes for those with stock tires or low profile tires. Of course if you make your own brackets you can put just about any fender you want on there.

I've got a stock motored with just slip-ons 08, I have been stuck in Houston traffic at 100 + temps for hours and hours, never had a problem with overheating.

Is the temp we see on our displays the coolant temp in the radiator or in the head?

Not quite, I'm living on a island in north western Washington now, it's a balmy 39 degrees and raining.
So I wonder if I have a stuck thermostat, if it's cold out my bikes temp gauge only goes up to one or 2 bars. Shouldn't the thermostat keep the temp up even in the cold??

3000psi, I ride in temps down to ~20. cold doesn't bother me just hate to have my bike in all that salt. anyway, When it gets that cold, I notice my gauge won't go above 2 bars either. I don't do any long trips when it gets that cold. Maybe a 2 hour ride would get it to 3 bars? Can't remember now but I am quite sure the bike will get to 3 bars in 2-3 minutes sitting at idle on a cold day. I always warm it up to operating temp but I'm sure it drops back to 2 bars as soon as I get rolling in the cold air.

The fender wont help since most of the heat comes in traffic. The second fan works well and will lower the temp one bar in traffic.

+1
that's what I find so ironic. In the fall I have to let the bike warm up otherwise it never shows a temp. But that's been the way all my bikes have been.

Can't wait to get my second fan from kawrick/zx14fan and figure out how to mount it!

There are some pictures floating around somewhere of someone using 3/4" aluminum square tubing and putting it in the channel of the radiator and bolting the fan bracket to it. You just have to drill out the welds on the bracket and swap it around so that the fan is angled the other way.

Wonder if one could simply invert the additional fan? Flip it over so the brackets are opposite? I don't know, just thinking outside the bun
