How fast can a ZX-14 go on a stock motor?

I don't care about uphill, downhill, here or in Zimbabwe...

....how fast has one gone and who did it?

Ya 'specially when he popped up and gave input over on my forum which has been a dead zone for the past couple months. Very glad to hear from him over there. Hope he comes back home here soon.

My estimation. Stock motor, stock exhaust.......probably not much over 186 even if limiter was disabled. Put a good full system on and PC with good tune and I think you will get ~190 maybe 192. You want 200, you have to go way beyond basic mods.

JMHO. Never went over 60 on mine.

Fish told him to "put down the crack pipe" a few days ago... A year or so ago Fish made a similar comment and it really pissed Smokin off. Maybe this time was last time.

Dogo. that is some avatar. My 7 year old saw it and told me to "click on the bread thing." Had to chuckle at that.

Best I've seen is 207 by a rider called "Snail" at the 200MPH Club's Judgement Day 9. At the same meeting my bike was speed trapped at 205.4. That's stock motor (unopened) with just a pipe and PC, Speedo Healer, geared up, stock wheelbase, lowered, strapped, mirrors off and foot shifting.

Totally stock, as it left the showroom, stock gearing, mirrors on etc, with just a Speedo Healer, again at a 200MPH Club meeting, Mike Grainger has done 198.7.

I expect someone's been faster?

Smoking still comes here. Just talked to him last night. He just has other priorities to take care of right now. He's hoping to get some track time on Roys bike tonight and Friday night........well he's been asked to pilot another bike. Sort of top secrete right now. Will let him tell about it if it doesn't get canceled. Our 1/8 mile track has been shut down for the past couple week because of the cold.

Do you think your larger-than-jockey size helped in the tailwind situation by acting as a sail and having more surface area for the wind to push?

The record at Bonneville is 189.6 mph for a stock bike (PP-1650) was set by yours truly in 2006. It has not yet been broken. Stock engine, stock pipes, no mirrors but had a PC. The density altitude was close to 6,700 ft. The speed is averaged over a mile and going both directions. What that speed would be at sea level, on pavement... I don't know but one could estimate-

As for a stock motor, the bike did 199.7 mph at Bonneville in 2008 on one of my passes. Density altitude about 6,200 ft. That record still stands too.

Back in 2006 my 14 went 190mph gps in the rolling start 9/10's mile runs we have down here.
This was with drilled stock mufflers, home made hi-flow a/filter, pc3 and speed resrtiction removed and skoot at stock height. At that time the skoot made right around 163 H.P. I later did the full exhaust where i gained 10 H.P., but we never went back out to the straight line stuff. I started to focus on riding and railing. I have always wondered how fast we would have gone with the exhauist and the extra H.P.
On my dyno a de-restricted 14 will shut down the recording of a dyno run at 199 mph, before the 14 hits the engine rev limiter. By the mathmatical calculations a 14 with stock rear tire and gearing would hit 201-202 mph. This is mathmatical and does not take into account rear wheel slippage out on the road.

it also doesn't account for aerodynamics which is a huge factor at that speed.

I have always heard that motorcycle aeros get very hard to fight when you get up way over 100. A motorcycle is high and narrow which is the opposite of fast cars. You race alongside a vette or a Porche and you have a much better view of the road ahead even if you are in a tuck. They have an aeros advantage and you have power/weight advantage. By the time things even up the bike is long gone unless cornering comes into play. Aeros don't help much there. 4 wheels to brake and corner is hard to beat unless you are a highly skilled rider.

The aeros help but IMHO, that is not the end all and be all. There are impressive LSR runs on naked bikes. Personally, I would not feel comfortable at high speed on a naked bike.

Air has the consistency of molasses at 200mph. Look at the runs at Maxton that Bill Warner did. That is a perfect example. He did 255 unfaired, put stock hayabusa bodywork on and went 264, put the hand-made bodywork on and went 272. Aerodynamics plays a huge role in LSR, don't fool yourself.

Fixed.

I thought he went 272 at Maxton and then 278 at TX?

Maybe we're talking about 2 different Bill Warners????

I would agree. We are looking at a 10% difference between naked and optimum. It must be even more significant sat lower speeds. I wouldn't have guessed. Still, most of us aren't going to have anything better than stock plastics. Good enough for me though. I'd take 5% faster.......if I ever went over 60 mph, that is.
