Project: Reviving 08 SE

Many of you know about the ZX-14 I crashed last summer due to own stupidity. Sad, and I'm committed to restoring this baby and putting it back on the road. Thanks for your help so far!! I started it for the first time on Apr 20 after 10 months of storage, woohoo!

Now I have smoke coming out of the engine after it runs for 10-15 seconds... After 30 seconds there's lots of smoke and engine begins to choke a bit. Don't know what comes after, I shut it off. Smoke is white, and comes out from the top part of engine somewhere right around where headers go into the engine. The fact that smoke comes out of where headers are mated with engine tells me I have a mating issue, and that's not my concern. The concern is of course that smoke is there in the first place.

I called my roommate's dad, he's a lifetime mechanic who works on cars, and he said it can be burning coolant, especially if it smells kind of sweet-ish (which it does).

He said a head might be cracked... so I'm gonna take off radiator/headers today to take a look, but wondering if you guys know of any other possible explanations?

Also, can I run engine when headers are off? Radiator being out of the way of course.

I would Not run the motor without any headpipe at all. I would get a coolant presure tester and presurize the cooling system before dissasembly. That will tell youif the cooling system is leaking with a gauge. Hope that helps Alex.

Took headers off and looked inside the holes - nothing unusual. Reattached headers and screwed them on real tight to ensure proper mating. Now my only idea is to run bike till it either chokes or stops smoking once I put coolant back and reattach radiator.

taking to dealer Sat to swap wheels so I'll ask them to measure coolant pressure, don't have instrument for that.
