OIL STARVED!!?

The oil pan nut was knock off due to hitting a rock in the road. I was at high RPM when it happened. By the time I got the bike under control (due to oil on the back tire) I had traveled about a quarter of a mile. I was too shocked to notice if my oil light came on as I turned the ZX14 off as soon as I gathered my wits. There was a little oil still draining out by the time I got the bike out of the road.

I did not drop the bike at any time (thank goodness).

Question: What steps should I take to see if it damaged the motor? In order of inexpensive to expensive please, as money is an issue.

Thanks for any and all responses,

You are probably ok. If you are worried pull the pan and look for shavings. The same thing happened to me but I have has no problems.

how does that shop gonna say you need a new motor with out pulling the pan and checking for shaving. looks like he is trying to rip you off big time this kind of thing happens all the time. i would fix the pan start her up see how she sounds then take it from their. i would take it to another shop if hes talking like that with out knowing if the motor is bad good luck .

your likely alright,
get the pan fixed , and start it up. you will need to circulate oil to flush any metal out if it ran dry, drop the oil and then you will see bearing material if you did damage.

that sounds like a good idea. give it a shot what you got to lose. .
1 i would jack the bike up from the back or both if you want
2 / you pull the side air vents
3/the middle fins lol what eva they call
4/under the front fairing theirs 4 little clips you gotta push in to remove
5/ you un screw the bottom fairing
6/the upper fairing
7/ you gonna have to un screw the radiater top and bottom so you could push it to the side a little
8/ un bolt the hearders pull to side
9/ un screw the oil pan and down she goes lol i would replace the gasket to be safe.

Does the oil level sight glass still read correctly with a Clems pan installed?

I ordered my pan on a Monday and got it on a Wednesday. The ship Priority Mail which uses Fed Ex air as thier carrier. Most of the US is 3 day shipping. The oil sight glass still reads the same. You will lose that extra .4 ounces required during an oil change. I just use 4 quarts no problems.

I ripped the drain plug completely out on a spreed bump. I had a little while before I could stop - tire slipping and traffic trying to run up my backside. Got a used pan from Lyle (Dubious) new gasket, fresh oil and went straight to the track. Have made lots of passes since.
While visually it loks like you dump all your oil in a hurry, it takes some time before the inner parts actually run dry. I won't make any guarentees, but I can't see where you incurred any internal damage unless you tried to drive it home after.

I've read about this a few times...seems like a good mod to switch to a Clems pan before a guy has laundry issues. is this on lowered bikes?

you sound like a smart man.
Yes you should get a clem or other cut pan before you lower the bike.
I glad with all these oil downs that nobody has been seriously hurt.

+1, run it with good oil first! Even if you do have some shavings, I personally say f* it and ride it until it gives a death rattle! Slick 50 FTW
