What should I look out for on a crashed zx14?

Hi everyone. A bit of background... My first bike was a GPz900R back in '93, then I saved up and bought a new 2000 ZX-12R which I rode in an almost purely city environment for 5 years. Hated the lack of bottom-end, so I went for an '05 Yamaha MT-01 which really rocks in the city, but since moved away into a mixed urban/rural environment. Hate the MT-01's lack of horsepower, but love it in the city, so looking at getting a ZX-14 in addition, for the country stuff.

Sounds luxurious, but here's the catch: I can't afford a new one, but plenty come up in various auctions around the place; hapless riders crash 'em you see.

Now one has come up close by and I'm looking at bidding for it. It has road rash on front fairing, headlight, front guard, rear seat cover etc. I have mechanical and ebay aptitude and see plenty of replacement stuff going cheap.

Now what do I look out for? Can the frame be out of alignment? Subframe? Do these chassis snap/crack in an obvious way? What should I pay?

Any help gratefully appreciated...

I haven't heard of any particular breakage problems related to anything other than the accident it must endure.
I would steer away from bikes with heavy structural damage, such as bent forks, bent rims, bent swingarms, or bent subframes.

Look for a low side write off.
I have noticed that all of the bikes I have worked on that sustained even minor impacts, the severely damaged parts transferred the energy to other parts of the bike, and twisted things that weren't readily apparent until it was torn down.

Things like stressed, fasteners with side loads that "pop" or spring when un bolted are often found only whan the bike is torn down.
Then you will see the REAL damage.

A gentle low side with cosmetic damage is what I would look for.

Excellent rebuild specimen, where it is purely cosmetic!
I would buy that for the right money without hesitation
Will they ship to Canada? LOL

It is very simple to see that bike low sided, then the frt fender broke and ground off from the bars being turned into the ground.

Get the Hong kong plastics for $700 like Big-T112 did!
Check with your state to make sure these bikes can be recertified if written off.
Some places will no longer allow it.

Thanks heaps for the advice. I would pay $18k for something unmolested and uncrashed with only 1000 miles. Do you have any idea how much to bid based on the fact that:
1) The title will now always say "repairable write-off" - resale adversely impacted.
2) It will cost for exhaust and cosmetic repairs.
...etc.

1 more thing to check is to make sure it did not run out of oil.
Did it grind a hole in the engine cover, the alternator cover?
Did it punch a hole in the engine cover?

They have tip over switches, that should prevent oil starvation when it lies on its side, so i would not be too worried.
So check for any engine oil or coolant and the damage causing any leaks.

as far as what it is worth, you will need to outbid salvage yards, or others with the same idea's in mind.

$18,000 ???
where are you from?
Even here in canada a left over brand new 08 can be had for $9500 OTD.
New 09 is $13500 approx.

You need to tally up the cost of oem parts, then ask local dealer labour estimate.
detailed pics and a rough figure should suffice.
get the wholesale value of the bike, and subtract the repairs including parts and labour.

The car kit engine packages go for about $3000 so that gives you an idea what salvage will get for the engine, ecu, TB's, guages, and rad.

Australia. We pay too much!

Having a look on bikebandit.com this machine very quickly appears to be a write-off (funny that). i.e wholesale - (parts +labour) < $0. Will therefore bid over salvage value for car kit engine package and there you have it!

Thanks heaps for your help.

"What should I look out for on a crashed zx14?"

Make sure that the brown skid marks can be removed off the seat.
And then you should be good to go!
