+4 Motor build

Just want to start off by saying thanks a lot to all the guys that spend a lot of time on the forum posting and helping everyone out. Even though this is my first post ive been lurking in the shadows reading as many post as i could get my hands on for the past 6 months or so. In Jan 08 i picked up my leftover 07 zx14 from a dealership up in Kansas. I was planning on waiting but got the dealer down to $9250 out the door, so i couldnt pass that up. I started getting some things for it later on that month exhaust and others.

Seems like im on the site at least once a day checking peoples projects and learning new things. So i figured i put my project out there so you guys can catch a little look and maybe some help here and there.

One day I was out riding and got into it a bit too much and the bike stood up on me and i rolled out of the throttle too fast and well you guys know the story from there. My tubes are dropped in the tripple trees, so this is a case in point. I was very lucky to keep the bike upright and not lay it down. That is a very bad feeling riding on a oil covered tire at 70 mph. I ended up getting the bike back in the shop took the oil pan off milled the bottom of the pan, TIGd a plate on the bottom and relocated the drain to the back. Everything was fine and i put about 200 miles on the bike until one day i was out for a nice ride and it started ticking. Long story short pulled my pan off and this is what i had.

Upon further disassembly of the motor i got a good look at the crank and well it wasnt good...

Once i knew the extent of the damage thats when i started to look on the forum to see what my repair would consist of. It started off as fixing it and getting it back to stock to where im at today. I ended up deciding to go with a +4 mil stock bore motor. I finally have all my parts in hand and will be posting pics of points throughtout the engine build. Hope you guys like the thread!!!

I'm surprised it went another 200 miles. It looks like that thing got tore up pretty badly when it ran dry!

What is a +4 stroker, in cc?

Ya it looks really bad i was out in the middle of nowhere when it began the ticking, I mean no cell phone so i tried to limp it home but it just goes to show you that if you even think somethings wrong shut it down.

it was based more on thin cylinder walls potential heat problems, then id have to get the head send out and get the dome smatched to new bore just certain things i had read about big bore motors . Trying to build the bike to be a street/strip not a full drag motor.

My crank was one of the first things that i had done on this little project. Falicon did the work on the crank. +4 welded and balanced.

Following the crank I bought a package deal from Falicon rods and CP stroker pistons.

I bought almost all of my stuff through either Falicon or from Ryan at Schnitz. Both places have been great so far and have worked with me on all my parts so youll only hear good stuff here. I picked up my Adams pan after all my major rotating components. I know its $$ but i got a little break on it and the quality is just great.

I know this pic isnt great but the diff between a stock pan with the drain plug moved to the rear and the Adams is still about 1 5/8". The pan is sick almost makes me want to run without any lowers.

That is NASTY!
I think you meant +4mm stroke, not 4mm overbore?
You got the crank fixed and left the bore stock?

never mind, I re-read it.... LOL

You will love the increase in torque! much better than a big bore anyway!

Since my last order has come in about 2 weeks ago i have been putting in a lot of hours between cleaning and starting the rebuild process. Just sucks because were in the middle of an outage right now at work and after a 12 hour day and then spending 4 hours in the shop a night, well it wears you out fast.

I started with cleaning all parts and touching up all parting flanges to ensure no dings or where any sealing would be an issue.

The process has taken a very long time starting to go back with everything just to be EXTRA careful not to make any mistakes. Once both the upper and lower cases were cleaned and ready i installed the mains and then assembled the cases and torqued them down to spec. Now the fun part measuring... I checked the bearing IDs with a snap gauge and a 1-2" mic. After making sure all my clearences checked out i did one more assembly using a plastigage. Just as a secondary check. I guess i did it to make me feel better even though i dont really care for that method.

after i was done with the mains i started on the rods. I cycled all the rods as they tell you to after 4 cycles on each rod i installed the bearings restretched and measured my clearances with my snap gauge/mic and made sure the bearings were in square. After making sure those clearances checked out i began preping the pistons. I did all the ring fit filing so each set of rings were filed to its specific cylinder. Cleaned all the pistons of shart edges and assembled the pistons to the rods and then set the rings. Its been a few since ive built a motor it didnt take me long to remember how mad i got when i was looking all over the shop floor for a wrist pin clip after it about took my eye out. Their slippery with that moly lube on the piston. lol After all that i loaded the pistons into their homes and flipped the case to attach the rods.

I plastigaged the rods too and made sure to shim on the sides of the rod when tightening to prevent misalignment of the bearings. After all that the clearences were done for the crank besides checking my runout and but thrust. I cleaned all the plastigage up and did the final assembly. I applied the sealant to the case in its designated spots, set the two halves and troqued everything down for the final time. while I had it upside down i installed some of the lower unit parts like oil line (new 115psi set pressure) new muzzy oil pump cover and then put the pan on. I was wanting to post all this as i went but didnt have much time and i didnt take detailed photos like some of these other guys do with their builds. That takes time and well i just really forgot.

Right now im kind of at a stopping point got burned out earlier this week so im taking a few days off. I have my head all disassembled and now i have to clean it and reinstall all my valves and new APE spring kit. Itll be a short thread but hope you guys enjoy it cause i always like reading about everyone elses project. Hopefully ill post some more pics in a few days. It kind of sucks because i just sent my exhaust out to be ceramic coated and it wont be back for almost 2 weeks so ill have everything back together waiting on the Tsukigi to arrive. I bought the wrap to do the headers too so im hoping that will help some of that heat in the exhaust gas and not in the motor. I forgot to mention but the balancers were all timed correctly to the crank.

Nice work!
Allot of guys don't take the time to shim the sides of the rod, ensuring they are torquing the caps and brgs in square!

Thanks as ghetto as it may sound i wasnt planning on that right now. I took my zx10 to the track a few times but never even got the chance to take my 14 so... i was thinking about building the motor without doing the cams or a port job yet and if i run decent times and use all the power of the bike this summer then ill have a project for next winter. Once it runs and i get the motor broken in id like to get it tuned. Anyone know anyone good around Oklahoma???
