Lookout "bruiser bike" market, new nakie bike coming

Race-inspired Italians to enter custom bruiser market? It looks that way

DUCATI ARE to launch a 1400cc muscle-bound street bruiser to challenge Harley-Davidson - that's the word on the street from Italy this morning.

Sources say the bike, which has been dubbed the Vyper, is already in running form and has started preliminary tests at the Bologna factory. They also say Ducati boss Claudio Domenicali has revealed the company is looking to branch out into a wider market.

It's reported the Vyper will feature a stroked version of the company's Testastretta engine, housed it Ducati's signature steel trellis frame. A 240-section rear tyre mounted in a beefy, hollow-section swingarm, is believed to also feature on the new machine.

Looks good to us!

If you ask me, the newer big bikes are too showy. High performance is about sacrificing everything to opperate the machine at or near it's potential. The conditions the bike is designed to run under should completely dictate it's appearence. What are they trying to do, giving us this "Transformer " look? If the bike is high tech, it's high tech. Don't try so hard to make it LOOK like it's high tech.

rook, its 2009 and the VMax, Bking, and this thing have the look. Are you suggesting they look more "retro", like the 80's VMax?

No. Perhaps "Transformer" was not a good analagy. Futuristic/gimmicky is better, maybe. I mean, the new bikes look like they are trying to reach into the future and be what all bikes might look like in 2025. That's all about appearence and it's hard for me to take seriously.

I'm pretty much a purist about asthetic design principles. A machine should be designed to do it's job first and the appearence that results is in perfect harmony with it's function. I am not comfortable with a machine that tries to look like something that it isn't. I want a machine to look good, but if a bike is just shaped to do what it is intended to do, it will look good and will look dignified.

I agree that trends in design have always been present. I just don't feel the futuristic hyperbike trend has much substance. Liter bikes are kind of raw looking but they look the way they should look to do their job and this in itself is quite a beautiful thing. I can't help but admire them despite their pointy, almost fragile appearence.

I didn't care for the grills on the 14 until I found that they do actually have a function. The tail on the old busa looks perfect but the new one is plain silly. The huge honking intake on the V-max looks like pure novelty.

Oh well, maybe I'll get used to the way things are in a couple years. We are supposed to have FUN on these things, anyway. I'd gladly ride any/all of them.

Yeah, the intention is to compete with the Harley fat tire bikes that are coming out. BKing and VMax are getting bigger wheels stock too.

the actual "240" size is pure speculation anyway according to the article

...I say just put the ZX-14's engine in a ZRX-type platform w/bikini fairing, on-the-fly rider selectable traction control, slipper clutch, a simple 4-2-1 exhaust, digital speedo/analog tach w/shift light, make it handle in the curves with brutal straightline acceleration, reasonable sporty ergos (not sportbike ergos) and call it a day

FYI. The FASTEST NAKED bike in the World (Bill Warner 246.6 MPH) uses a 240 tire on a 8.5 rim. Yeah, it doesn't go around corners too well but at that speed what would. It will be racing at the Texas Mile this weekend with bodywork, should be interesting. LSL

Must need the traction... ? to overcome the poor aero's?
Must be making massive power to punch through the air naked.
super cool!

got any pics?
Busa? Turbo? Nitrous?

If he is doing 246 naked, it must be good for about 260 with fairing?
That would be a new record?
