airbox warning to ZX14 owners!...
dont know if this is old info or not...
was chatting with a friend who had the following experience...
the bodywork well nuts that mount into the sides of the airbox on his zx14went missing, they were replaced ...
now here's what happened. TUrns out previous owner had stripped the brass threads in the nissing wellnuts, brass etc inside airbox... when the wellnuts were replaced this sealed the airbox and sucked (you guessed it) brass shavings etc into the engine... toasted the engine...
so beware and check to make sure these wellnuts dont go missing - if they do, STOP and inspect your airbox!!!

Well it is old News to some of us but still it's good info for all the new guys to keep an eye out ..Guys if you don't over tighten the well nuts you will NOT have this problem ...

There is enough metal, from a few threads in a wellnut, to destroy the motor ?

Where the hell are these nuts, I removed the all the body work to do exhaust and powercommander. Could someone post a pic?

I haven't messed with my airbox, guess now would be a good time to check it out. Sucks working on the road bc I read stuff like this on the internet on my phone and by the time I get home I'm so ready to ride I forget about it!

It doesn't take much torque to tear a wellnut. I've done it, more than once. That has got to be the stupidest design flaws ever. If the brass nut tore and fell off down the throat of a throttle body, disaster.

You don't have to tighten them that much , and if you're really ham fisted locktite them without torquing them down that much and be done with it.

Thanks, nice tip Fish, I hadn't heard of it before but it makes perfect sense.
The bushes should have a blind thread so no swarf or thread material can get to the inside and be ingested by the engine.

I have been cleaning out the airbox / frame to prepare it for welding and sealing it to contain 30 psi boost....
One of my welnuts was torn half way through as well.... good heads up Fish!

I did a "rant" on these awhile ago. Not much you can do to change em.
Just check them over real good anytime you remove the plastics !

I was considering riveting in a nutplate....esp since I don't need sealing.

I suppose you could use a thread insert and permanently install threads into those holes, replacing the wellnut altogether? Then use locktite or silicone or some other product to seal the threads?

Ooooh and i've seen a 14 or two that had missing wellnuts . One guy said both sides tore and fell inside and he just needed to replace them... Might have to replace more than that if they get sucked in the motor :O

Just be sure to use VERY LITTLE loctite as too much will definately cause the rubber to tear before the loctite breaks loose.
I used loctite "stick" and had it happen.
A dead end threaded insert would be much better.

I have them sitting in front of me with the reciept. At these prices replace them every time you remove the plastic.

Well I lost one in the air box. I didn't think it was a big deal but I kind of did figure that nut had to go some where. How do I get it out?

take the tank off, pull the plates and go fishing... I wouldn't put a wellnut in there again either but thats just me...

Yeah, I found mine that fell in the second time I looked, and it was quite a relief. Just use a good flashlight and you should find it. Mine was at the very top of the airbox...

If it wasn't for those stupid little ffffers I wouldn't have taken the flies out as soon, So maybe kawi designed em that way for a reason? Found mine just waiting to be sucked into cyl. #1.

mine didn't strip as I've seen this before, but the rubber ripped and I had to pull it out. I ordered a new one but haven't received it yet.
