Crankcase Pressure

I just installed a turbo kit on my 06 zx-14. It has a small filter for the crankcase breather. While it was on the dyno the dyno guy called me and said that the bike was puking oil out of the breather. I confirmed this when I got there. I pulled the filter off and even at idle the crankcase vent tube is pushing air out. IS THIS NORMAL? I did not check before the turbo. But I did remove the charge pipe and just has the bike running naturally aspirated and the vent was still pushing air out. I have read that on the dyno a zx-14 blows oil into the airbox quite badly at times. I would just like to know if there is a remedy for this. Also, why would the crankcase have a positive pressure? Where is the pressure coming from? Does not seem to be blow by from the pistons, leakdown is good. Some insight would be appreciated.

there is a remedy...try running a longer hose...but then the freaking valve cover may leak as in my case ..i too just installed a turbo and by just placing the vent filter on my bike caused leaking valve cover ...my bike needed the vacuum pulling from air-box to keep from leaking..i'm now gonna try venting my valve cover thru the reed valve cover (kleen air) on top and use the longer vent hose also

do you guys have the modified oil pans ?
If so you may need to pull the vent hose in the oil pan.

It has been reported to cause blowby .

If you have a modded pan you have to make the breather tube in the pan shorter ...If you have a stock pan you just need to keep the oil level below the upper line and you should NOT have a problem puking oil out the breather tube ... A longer hose will help also .....

The reason for the breather pumping out air is simple ...Just as the pistons pump air upward the also pump air on the down stroke ..That with some nomal leakage by the rings make crank case pressure ... Simple yes ...

My turbo kit was by Cycle-Logic Motorsports. It is very well made and the guys there especially Dave have been so helpful that I won't go anywhere else. They are some of the nicest and most knowledgeable people. Dave has spent an enormous amount of time with me over the phone without one complaint. He personally has done more to help me than some of the shops locally where I live. I tried to talk to a few other turbo kit manufacturers before I bought this one. Like Muzzy and Mr. Turbo. They were all very rude at the onset and were not interested in anything but selling thier kits. At least that was what I got from them when I called. Cycle logic even sent me some e-mails with pics and information before I got the kit so I could start tearing the bike down and be ready when the kit arrived. Give them a call you will not be dissappointed.

That's cool.........I didn't need to call anyone for my turbo - but I am considering their lock-up clutch kit. The stock clutch slips under decent boost.

Show us some pics of your setup.

What is the reason for the STOCK vent tube being that long in the oil pan?, Why couldn't the crankcase vent the pressure with no tube or the stock tube being shorter??? Curious, Since i thought i read somewherewhere some were taking the vent hose off(not sure about this, just trying to get more hind sight).

Not sure what you are asking .... Stock pan with no Mods you don't need to do anything to it .... Stock pan modded ( Cut for ground clearance ) you need to shorten the pick up tube and breather tube in the pan .......Yes you can yes remove the breather tube in the pan but i would rather leave it in place and just shorten it ..

Run a hose from the crankcase to the kleen. You have to disconect the k leen first then just use longer hose problem solved. All the turbo 14s dyo'ed here do it and some strokers, this is what we do to stop it..... Bill....

Hey Bill.
the turbo's are runnin the crank vent to the Kleen system too?
don't they smoke then?
Does enough oil blow through the exhaust to bung up my AFR O2 sensor?

hmmmm....

Solved the problem! Come to find out that the dyno guys got so excited about the turbo that they ran it right up to check the HP and couldn't wait to map it. Fried the pistons. Long drawn out scenerio but it is over with. Any way I got it all put back together with ceramic coated pistons and a longer vent tube along with a secondary breather routed from the oil filler cap and no more oil issues. Come to find out that since the breather is at the back of the engine combined with hard acceleration and positive crankcase pressure from the turbo it does fog a little, the mods above though did solve the issue niceley.

Also! For all you modified oil pan guys, the modified pans that I have seen available require you to remove the stock oil cooler system. My turbo runs quite hot at times and I am glad that the coolant system also cools the oil. Just a thought.
