decel backfire

I know they all do it some but I cut my can down on my exhaust and it really does it now. My old busa had a smog pump I blocked it off and it stopped the decel popping. Checked header pipe and have no leaks.

The backfire or popping is related to air getting into the exhaust system, but I seriously doubt that you will be able to eliminate it by sealing the system. The ZX14 ECU cuts the fuel flow when the throttle is closed and the rpm is above 3500 rpm. It does this to meet Euro 3 emissions. When the fuel cuts back on it backfires. Air will be in the exhaust since it gets pumped by the cylinders. Sealing the leaks doesn't stop the decel backfire. With the stock exhaust system the catalytic converters and exhaust baffles tend to muffle the backfire and you don't hear it. When you go to a full exhaust system it really can become apparent. Mine even shot flames out the back. I already put a post on a fix, but I'll repeat.
You need to complete each step. No step can be skipped. This is the only solution I know that works (excluding a very careful throttle control during decel, which I can do but was a pain).

1. Lock the ECU in the neutral fuel map, which does not cut fuel when the throttle is closed. Indeed, if it did, the bike would stall. The fuel maps for 1st through 6th gear cut the fuel. I know of no fix other than locking to the neutral fuel map. The easy way to do this is to pay $65 or so for Ivan's TRE006A and perform the simple 5 minute install. If you are so inclined, you can make your own resistor with parts from Radio Shack. Me, I bought the TRE006A from Brock's Performance since I happen to like the guy and I want to support his business.

2. The neutral map also delays opening of the secondary throttle plates (flies). You have to remove the flies or you will lose a ton of low-to-mid range power. More on this later.

3. With the flies out and the ECU locked in neutral you have to add a Power Commander and a fuel map appropriate for your setup. Brock offers a special map compatible with his exhaust system for those running a TRE006A with flies out. Ivan does the same. I don't know about Muzzy. If you don't run the right map you f/a will be too lean and you will risk damage to the bike over time.

After making the above modifications I have never been able to induce a backfire or a decel pop, and I've tried. I already had my flies out, Brock's exhaust, and Brock's map. When I installed the TRE006A and changed the map for the new setup I noticed no loss in low end power relative to the previous setup (based on seat of the pants - no dyno run). Brock states that 1/4-mile times are slightly reduced due to a small power loss at the high end, most likely due to reduced ignition timing. Being a street rider that makes no difference to me. On-off throttle transitions are also smoother than before.

Yep, the gear indicator shows N all the time. I never paid much attention to it anyway. It responded too slow. Losing the gear indicator was well worth losing the backfire.

i love my backfire bomber!!! you can control by eliminating air leaks and watching the throtlle application, but there is nothing like lighting up a bunch of squids on the way to oz.

Sorry to awaken an old thread, but I did have a quick question.
I decided to get a GIPro to lock in the neutral map and derestrict the limiter... but I was curious how the neutural map varies compared to the other gear maps? I mean obviously the neutral map doesn't cut fuel on decel, but is it different in any other way?

nothing better than watching jump when a two foot blue fireball comes out. Works best when doing 150mph+ fly-by on unsuspecting cagers on dark 2 lane highways, takes a little practice but when done right they shit even worse than when you just buzz'em. And no i cant see them jump, but they do almost go in the ditch.

Another decel backfire fan here. I love slowing down behind slower bikes and other traffic. They seem to want to just get out of the way A.S.A.P.
