I have had to use that one a couple of times!! Taking the flies out is one of those funny things it doesnt really get easier the more you do it! I have taken several out and the easiest one I ever did was mine (the first) it seems to get harder everytime

Mileage could play a part in the difficulty of removing them.

the thread locker they use is more like an epoxy, a heat gun does wonders too

There is one trick no one mentions. With left cover off turn on ignition and butterflys cycle full open then close. Watch the moving part and grab that while loosening the screws to keep the butterfly shaft from rotating while loosening. I heated the screws with a solder iron and to remove the screws push down on screw fairly hard while applying turning pressure. The key is not to let up on the downward pressure or the driver will cam out and strip the screw. Keep a steady turning pressure and the screw will start to turn, don't expect it to turn right away. If the driver cams out and damages the screw try some valve grinding compound on the driver tip and use a new screw driver before anything like drilling out. I have also used a dremel type tool to cut a slotted head on a buggered screw before, turning a philips screw into a slotted but not sure of the clearance in this application.

Go to Lowes BEFORE attempting to pull the flies... buy a Klein "Electricians" #2 11" long screwdriver with the hardened tip. The Klein brand is located by themselves, away from the other tools. Cost was just under $8, but well worth the money!!! We did two 14's, back to back...first the 08 and then my 06. NO PROBLEMS whatsoever!!! We heated the first two screws, but found no difference removing them without the heat. Just make sure to apply firm pressure while trying to keep the screwdriver perfectly straight (a few of the screws are a little hard to get directly overtop of) and only attempt to make a 1/4 turn at a time, this is important... and remember to stop turning before you let up on the pressure to the screw head, they are VERY tiny... then REGRIP & repeat. Do Not get in a hurry, I believe that's where some get into trouble. Just imagine that you're disassembling a Bomb... that mind-set worked Very Well for me.
Hope this info didn't offend the mechanics onboard, it was intended for those (like myself) who want to do this mod themselves, but are a little unsure of what they may be getting into, especially with all the stripped screw reports that have been posted in the past.

A brand new long #2 screwdriver is the best way to go. I bought one and used it on my 07 and it hasn't been used since. It took them loose, no problem

If you have already stripped some screw slots where no type of screwdriver is going to help, I recomend the purchase and use of a decent set of needle nose channel lock pliers. You will need a set with the jaws being squared off so that when you grasp the screws, the jaws will be flush on the secondary plates. Also while holding the linkage so that the flies will not open, press down on the pliers while turning slowly but surely counter-clockwise. All this should be done after the bike is warmed up a little, and the screws directly heated if possible. I recommend trying this several times before resorting to drilling the screws out. And yes, I found all of this out the same way as you. Put a magnetic probe or at least a rag underneath the secondaries and above the primary flies. Most of the time at least one screw will drop down, and hopefully get caught by the primary flies. Good luck!

Use extreme caution when using a flat head and mallett, the servo shaft can be bent very easily. Try grinding approx 1/16" off tip of phillips, use file to reshape blades, and with slow, even pressure loosen screw. Remember to have patience!

Quick and hardcoremass are right, be slow and deliberate and removing the flies will be no problem. My 14 had approx 1500 miles on it when i removed the flies. Using a brand new screwdriver I applied firm pressure and slowly turned each screw. They came right out no need to heat the screws (although i had a heating iron on stand by). I was paranoid about loosing a screw down the throttle body so once the screw was loose i put a megnetic pick up tool down next to it. That first ride with no flies was swweeet!

Removed flies from 14s and the Connie14, never a problem. I know the tip doesnt help matters at this point but it's a piece of cake if you remove them after really warming the motor up to the point the fan comes on then spray some SeaFoam and let it soak for 3-5 minutes. Lightly tap with the right screwdrive and wala!..they are off without a hiccup.

Add me to the list of idjits who just stripped a screw. Done several bikes and this is the first one stripped.
I'm tempted to reach for the hammer ... hehe lol. No!
MY brand new Klein #2 aint helping either, it's a cereal bowl in the head now.

I used a set of extra long 90 deg needle nose pliers that I ground the jaws back halfway so the jaws are shorter and more beefy. Do 1/4 turn at a time and they will come right out. On both my ZX and C14 one or two was very stubborn. The extra long handles give you a great mechanical advantage to grip the head of the screws with, and the length of reach you need to access the screw heads.
