Added a second radiator fan on the 14

Looks like I should try photobucket. For now go here for all the pictures: http://picasaweb.google.com/SciFiJoe/ZX142ndRadiatorFanMod
I'll redo the photos tonight.

It was only the beginning of June when one late evening I was riding home on the 14 in slow moving traffic and there goes the temp gauge. Past middle, then just below H. What the He|| is going to happen in July or August in the afternoon? So it's off to the forum to find out what fellow salty balled riders are doing. This bitch really gets you hot between the legs Anyway it seems I don't have to worry about the 14 overheating until the stupid gauge starts to blink. Hmm, I don't like that idea. So I decide to add a second fan. It should fit. No problem right? Well it does fit but its a pain in the a$$ to do.

OK, first remove the radiator:

Now get the second fan (bought mine new on ebay for $50):

Remove the fan from the bracket, held on by 3 small screws:

Now take the bracket apart. Drill out the welded rivets and gently pry apart. You're going to have to mirror the brackets in order to get a left fan to fit on the right side of the radiator. That bracket with the sideways bend is a bitch:

I used some 3/4" aluminum square bar to make the top and bottom mount. I fits right in the channel of the radiator:

I fabricated the bottom bracket so that it would be the same distance up as the original bracket. I also made sure to leave a little space between the bracket and the radiator:

Here are the pieces welded. It may not be pretty but it works

Here's the assembled pieces on the radiator. Look closely at the top left mounting bracket on the new (right) fan. The good news here it that you share the existing center mount. The bad news is that this bracket has a bend in it that you have to reverse. Heat it up real good to bend it. I messed it up a bit but if I had to do it again I think I could do better. The bottom line is it fit.

Check the clearances before and after mounting the radiator back on the bike, you may need to add a washer or two to get proper clearance:

Finally the electric. The original fan is run off a 15 amp fuse. Running two fans off the same fuse would probably blow the fuse causing you to overheat and have a bad day. I chose to mount a paddle switch. I wired the positive from the battery to a fuse holder with a 15 amp fuse then to the paddle switch then to the blue wire on the fan. Then I took the black wire on the fan and soldered a small length of wire to it and I grounded it on the frame. I didn't take a picture of that but here's where I put the switch:

Now when the gauge gets to the middle mark I'll throw on the fan. The original fan will still operate as designed. It's been cool here on Long Island since I did this so I don't know how it's going to do in some real heat. I'll post an update in a couple of weeks.

If you have a Florida ZX14 such as myself and many others on this forum, nothing is going to happen when it sits in extreme heat :P

Thanks for the info SciFiJoe. Hope you don't mind but I thought your instructions were important enough to combine the text and pics into a .pdf file which can be accessed using Acrobat Reader. Hopefully I captured your document word for word. It credits you with the creation of the document and provides a link to your original post. The .pdf file can be downloaded at:

Thanks Raptor14! That's awesome. Great work ScifiJoe. Mine could really use the second fan. There is going to be bidding wars for fans on E-bay now.

Just a question, how about just turning another oem 14 upside down and fabbing the mounts on the rad to make that work? Looks like plenty of room, and it wouldn't be near as hard.

btw, nice work Joe

I'm wondering if the 2nd fan on the Concours14 will fit the ZX14 without modification. Anyone have any knowledge on this?

OK, now I've got the photo thing working but I can't edit my original post. Maybe you're only allowed a few edits per post? Whatever, here's the whole post with pics:

If it's upside down then the fan would hit the headers. At least Brock's header, probably the stock ones also.

Here's what I did...used only distilled watter and a full bottle of Redline. Now I'm running at between 1 bar below and 1 bar above the halfway point; this during stalled traffic at temps over 90. idling for over 45 minutes...and it never ever goes more than 1 bar over 1/2...

I had seen all bars light up twice last year in heavy traffic, but since I changed the mix to Redline and distilled, she runs way cooler consistently. I wonder if a 2nd fan would keep it at the halfway mark or below in the same scenario...but I don't really have issues with heat. I do notice that it takes longer to get to 1 bar below center than it did before in warmer ambient temps on the highway, but still runs much cooler in traffic. This is probably also due to less friction, as the engine now has 22k KM's on it, so that may have been a factor as well, but the mix made a big difference, no doubt about it!

Getting rid of the antifreeze will help cooling enormously as FBA found. In that case using Water Wetter is mandatory as the water pump needs a source of lubricant.
