Counterculture: ZX14 fitted with SW-MOTECH luggage racks
Here are some pics of my 14 with the SW-MOTECH top and side racks installed. Actually, only the mounting brackets are installed permanently; the racks go on and come off in a cinch. See below:
First: what it looks like with luggage (Givi panniers):

Second: what it looks like without luggage (permanent look):

And the step in between: The 3 racks that take about one minute to install or remove:

Here are closeups of the mounting points for the racks:

The brackets (mount points) are easy to install. The system itself is quick and easy to use and is as solid as any other system out there.
The only difficulty in this little project was shortening the seat cover to have it fit.
Comments please...
p.s.: FYI the North American distributor for SW-MOTECH parts is twistedthrottle.com.

LOL
you could put a couple of 20kg olympic plates in the trunk and ride across the continent on the rear wheel!
Those things are massive. How does it handle crosswinds etc?
The front must get real light when you put luggage in the trunk.

The two laterals are for beer. The top is the BBQ for tailgate parties...!!!
(Top is 52 litres and laterals are 41 litres each).
Seriously, I just installed the system so I can't quite answer your questions just yet.
I did have a similar setup on my VFR and had no problems with it. Lateral winds didn't affect handling very much at all. I did feel that my VFR was less aerodynamic though...! The VFR's front never seemed to be light, nor on turn ins nor on starts, but then again, it didn't have the oumpf the 14 has.

IF I was gonna do some serious touring I would want the side bags, but would have a collapsable rear tail bag, one that sits on the passenger seat. I would be worried about having the weight way up and way way back there like that.
The part I would find unnerving is the trunk hanging way back behind the rear axle like that. The side bags look like the brackets aren't to difficult to remove, and water tight

I forgot to mention earlier that in my travel configuration the 2 laterals are used to put clothes and other necessities (most of the weight) whilst the top contains a jacket or two and a couple extra pair of boots, or it's left empty to be able to put 2 full face helmets in when visiting somewhere. So I'm not worried about the rear weight.

Guess you didn't catch on to the whole Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hide concept here, did ya?!
The racks (and luggage) are on the bike only for the length of a trip. They come off litterally within a minute or two. Only the mounting points remain permanent.
Let me explain with pictures...
1- The bike looks like this permanently:

2- Until I decide to travel. Then I put the racks on:

3- And finally, I put the luggage on:

So... the only things that are installed permanently on the bike are the mounting points (4 on each side) and the top rack:

And thus, the bike ALWAYS looks like this:

But I can put these things on it within a minute or two for when I do travel:

turning the bike into this:

And then I take them off within a minute or two, and the bike returns to this:

I concur that when travelling, the bike may not look so hot. But it takes but a couple minutes to turn it back into the beauty it actually is.

Everything is sold separately.
First of all, you order either or both side rack kit and/or top rack kit according to which brand of hard luggage you own (in my case GIVI luggage). If you don't own hard luggage yet, determine which brand suits you best (GIVI, Hepco & Becker, Krauser, other...) then go ahead and order/purchase said luggage. (I purchased my luggage years ago at the local dealership). Wait until you receive it and check it over to see if it really suits you. If all is ok, then go ahead and order the SW-MOTECH rack system.
In the SW-MOTECH system, the top rack (plus top expander plate) and side racks (plus mounting brackets) are all generic. The adapter kits, the ones you install on the side racks and on the top plate, are application (i.e. luggage brand) dependant.
quote: Where did you order them and how much?
You can purchase the side rack kit (brackets and racks) and/or the top rack kit (alu-rack and top plate) separately at:
twistedthrottle.com
If and when you put in your order, make sure to specifiy which adapter kit you need for your specific brand of luggage (i.e. when ordering the top plate and/or the side racks).
I purchased the full SW-MOTECH system in january of this year (2007) for a total price of $383 USD including shipping handling.
That price excludes the GST (here in Canada) of $58 CDN and UPS's outrageous import charge (brokerage fee plus tax on brokerage fee) of $60 CDN .
Yep, it's exxpennnsive but, imho, worth every penny for not having to wrestle with soft luggage every day on a long trip .

Ok so I have had my 14 for about a month now. made my on plate holder mounted off one of the unused cannon(muffler) mounts, roaring toyz low exit megaphone exhuast, swingarm extensions, pc3,bla bla bla. I can't use that motech system but can I use the givi if i get that euro tail? does it remove as easily as the motech? and lastly can I still use the motech tail bag mounting?
