Actually it's easy enough to miss seeing that, being wedged between the pics. For that reason I was going back and forth between just giving a straight answer, it's the bottom pic,
or the above, but the humorous side won out, even though really not so fair. Deciding factor was I figured jimzx9r would see the humor in it, minimal though it was.

Anyway, I personally sure would have preferred the ZX-10'ish design

But on the other hand, that Stage 1, though aesthetic for a sports tourer, seems as if it would have been a real whale. Certainly seems to have more frontal area.

I guess the market -- combined ZX-12R sales plus ZZR-1200 sales -- was not seen as big enough to split between two bikes?

It would have been a cool idea, though maybe someone familiar with the realities would have said a STUPID idea -- for there to have been one bike, but two sets of bodywork...
dealers wouldn't even necessarily have to stock both kinds of bike because they could change one over to the other with 30 minutes labor and a swap of plastics... But I don't know
of any bike the Japanese (if anybody) has done that way, so maybe that is not practical even though it seems to make sense.

Yeah I'm dumb, didn't read any of the text and just looked at the photos and saw #2 was cut off.

I like 1 and 2 a lot more than what we ended up with.
