Rear fender removal with pics It took me 10 times as long to get the pics online as it did to do it. A ten minute job, at the most.
Get access to the trunk. The rear fender is held on by four bolts. Two of the bolts go down to the fender assy, two come up from the fender and are secured by the visible castle nuts.
Remove the two 4mm allen screws that hold the rear plastic cover to the rear of the tail section. Lift it off (there's a velcro patch at the very rear).
After removing the cover, you can see the turn signal and license plate light connectors bundled up with a plastic 'sock' over them for moisture protection.
Lift the metal tab and pull the 'sock' up
Remove the sock, and you'll see the three connectors.
There's a small plastic rivet that pulls up from the bottom of the plastic tray.
If you thread the wires out of the hole (not really necessary) the tray will look like the above pic.
Take the two nuts off the forward bolts and the two bolts out of the rear of the plastic tray, and the whole turn signal / mud flap assy drops right off.
I think the weight is about 2 lbs. Didn't have a postal scale to check it.
This is what it looks like when you are done. Note that there are two long vertical openings in the tail that will need to be sealed, or could be used for flush turn signals, say from a SV1000?
Other nice things I noticed:
Fuse box. Very small, easy access.
Battery. Good location, once again, easy service.
Notice all the FI connectors are easily accessible.
So what we've seen is that there's a MAJOR philosophy change between the 12R and the 10R. The 12R had the wiring junctions behind the engine, the 10R puts them up under the seat for MUCH easier access.

SWFT>>>>How are you planning on fastening your plate bracket? Can it possibly be modified to work in/with the existing holes?

2fast - Yes, just run four bolts up to or down from the trunk. I put it all back together, just wanted to illustrate how easy it is.

when i did mine i just took the two bolts and put them up through the holes that secure the tailsection.
then i drilled two holes and notched the tag with a grinder so i could mount it vertically off of the rear
chainguard bolts. i still dont have a tag light but im probably going to mount a LED in a gromet in the big hole
in the trunk. mounting the tag like this makes it easy to cover with your foot when you run the toll booth.

Oh lord...I need to post pics! Using what is there for now is a nice clean look. I used the original metal brackets that bolt up the old mud flap. Grinded off the hooks and added two L brackets (one on each side). Re-drilled my tag and that was done.
Now, where the original rear reflectors are mounted, I drilled out that bolt and pushed my mini-blinkers through.
Someone, anyone, please tell me how to add picks before I fly out to the ROK and I'll post,
-lukn

Hey guys, If you look at how the bike is designed you'll see that the battery box is a great place to mount the plate. It's almost the same as my Z1000. It will be visible from behind if you mount it there.
I did this on both my ZX-6R and my Z1000. It seems Kawasaki knows that street riders will want to take off all of the DOT mandated crap. Looks good and it keeps the lines of the bike looking clean.
I took the original plate bracket and turned it upside down. Then it's just a matter of drilling two holes in the battery box to mount the plate bracket. Just make sure you use a bolt that has a smooth head so that you don't damage the battery.
As far as lighting, just buy a couple of lighting bolts (bolts with lights integrated into them) online for about $15.00. They work great.

The LED's that are mounted on the bottom of the undertray. See them? They are silver. They probably aren't legal but neither is doing 145mph That doesn't stop us from trying though! It helps to know your hand signals too! Heh heh!
I've had the both the state's finest and local law enforcement behind me both at night and during the day and they've never said a thing. Ahhh the joys of owning a naked sportbike! :-)
