I can't help but chuckle while reading about underdogs & overdogs. We've all got some competitive blood in us, if we didn't we'd be knitting by a fireplace somewhere.

Sal has a business & speed sells and Sal knows speed. Not only is his stuff fast but it's tough & that's the reason I never hesitate to tell folks about him. A local guy is taking his 'Busa to him even though there are closer places to build a bike. Ace Performance in my opinion is tops when it comes to LSR.

It's great to have help in your corner. Sal has his crew, I have the boys, Todd has Deb , etc. but Karl does so much by his self and his drive is second to none. As I stated earlier, he is my hero because of his drive not to mention his talent. He's not a spring chicken but he'll work dust to dawn and drive across country like it's nothing.........my kind of guy.
I know what was on his agenda for going to Florida and that was to have fun. How many folks would make that trip for one day of running, not too many. I truly think being the fastest is not that high on his list but make no mistake, he is competitive.

I can't help but admire guys like him and Gary. I've seen them both drive for untold hours, make a pass, hurt a motor and just smile.........my kind of guys.

I sincerley salute all you folks who enjoy this chosen sport, we are better for it.

My hat's off to both of these guys...both are tireless (and fast!) competitors.

I think this event is just a harbinger of things to come this year. I expect to see a lot of fast Kawasaki's at the track. It's shaping up to be a great season!

I cannot wait for Loring myself..... that was so much fun without my bike, I am almost beside myself waiting to go with my bike Yippie.........I get all warm and fuzzy just thinking about it! And I think we all are extremely proud of both Karl and Sal for being the great racers that they are. I only wish that Karl would have gone faster so that Sal would come to the Texas Mile again and I could meet him! Well that and the fact that I always want TFA to go the fastest. Without the TFAers, LSR would not be a part of my life. They are my team and I love them all!

Phantom I took Todds post describing Karl a little bit different than you are making it sound. I think what Todd was saying about Karl is that he did not have near the support network nor the crew that Sal had. He pretty much is a one man band. Being part of TFA myself I would never describe Karl the way you were saying as an underdog nor do I think Todd would. Just my opinion I coould be wrong about Todd I guess.

I guess you mean by support network you mean Sal's wife and son. He basically is the same as Karl as far a crew. It is Sal and Sal alone who has made these accomplishments. He doesn't have an elaborate shop with tons of equipment nor a bunch of "crew" testing his theories, he thinks about something and goes out and tests it like everyone else. Sometimes he gets it right and sometimes he doesn't. Yes Karl has a weight disadvantage but his horsepower and torque more than makes up for it. So in my opinion it is a straight up game between the two considering all things. Both guys are very personable and friends off the race course and determined foes on it as it should be. So I say congratulations to Sal for running 206.765 on the timing lights 211 on GPS. Nice meeting Karl and very best luck for the future. Hope to see all at the next event.

woo HOO!
Back in Texas after a great weekend.
cold as a witch's tit in Norway, stout side/head wind, humidity musta been zero.
My lips are chapped even worse than after kissing on Carol Grady all night in 9th grade.

The 1st pass (199) was a roll off the line, go easy, shakedown, but i rolled thru the shftlight in 1st to 13,480 rpm. oops. may have hurt the motor. I'll do a leakdown tonight or tomorrow night and see.
2nd pass was 195, 3rd was 194 and oil pressure log was flaky. not real low, just flaky. so i shut it down and went yakkin' around the pits.

My rpm thru traps on the 194 was higher (11,980) than my 199 pass (11,900). Bike was w-a-y leaned over. Big side wind on that pass.

Too damn bad about Dean's transmission, ended up locked in 4th, he never got a clean pass.

Roy was beating the shit outa his 14 as usual. Experimenting with this & that.

It was way cool to see Sal, Mike, Dale, & crew on their home ground. Big disappointment that Mike's bike had fork issues. Sorry I can't remember the names of everybody I met
Big congrats to Sal wringing 211 outa Dale's bike in that wind. Sal ROCKS!!
I saw a great picture of Dale going thru the traps damn near sitting up (maybe that's one of ACE's speed secrets , or maybe an issue with Dale's glasses?)

underdog/overdog? That's racing!
My take is that Sal and Mike get the incredible speeds outa that lil 1287 by wringing every bit of hp outa that mill, getting all the aeros right, and purely riding the shit outa it. Nothing is left on the table. They have been experimenting for 10years? of 9/10's and paying attention.

I left the track at 4pm and didn't get outa Florida till 2am; big fukkin state.

Biggest bad luck is that the full car of family evaporated at literally the last min and I only had Outlaw Country on Sirius radio for company.
Upside of of listening to that station for so many hours is that I am pretty sure that Lyle Lovett does indeed say "keep it in the panties" one time in in his song "Keep it in the Pantry".

The 2 guys who put on the event did a GREAT job for the resources they have.
LSR with a big dose of the Fast and the Furious.
Incredible track, best of all the ones i've seen.
I will go back, yup.

Sounds like you had a good time out there karl. I'm hoping to see you at Mojave. It's just too bad that I won't be able to race. Especially since i'm missing a race at my home track lol :P. I guess i'll just have to sit on your bike and make engine noises while pretending to ride :P.

Karl, I'm the one that showed the photo of Dale sitting up. If you would like some photos of you and your bike crossing the line etc. send me your email address or pm me your home address and I could burn a cd with the full resolution photos on it and send it to you.

Congrats Sal, Karl, Roy, everybody, nice work. A bit frustrating for me, but that's racing, still had fun. It is definitely a great facility, I'll be back someday, maybe make it a New Year habit. Great pics Mike.

I won't know exactly until it's apart, but it wouldn't shift into 5th gear. I tried a few things, and after 4 passes it stuck in 4th. Probably the shift forks are bent and jammed. The transmission is all stock, and was showing signs of abuse last season. Shifted fine on the bench.

It's too cold to play with it now, I'll take it apart next week and see what's up. Hopefully a few undercut gears, shift forks, and air shifter will be the solution. Cha-ching.

Wow, that's pretty gutsy running a stock trans with your hp! I guess the 10R trans is a lot more stout than the 12R's.

I'm actually sending out my spare 14 trans this week. As good as the 14 trans is, it has zero undercut from the factory.

Have you seen one of those transmissions in the flesh?

They are not the hot ticket for high hp, but can be made to survive with enough money.

Mine doesn't have the billet gears. It has the undercut, shift drum mod, heavy circlips, one gear was replaced, and all new shift forks. Parts and labor for just the trans rework was over $1k.

I hate to be a contrarian, but i feel that expensive work on the 12's trans is not required.

My ole heap put 1000 1/4 passes down, many, many 8.9's - 8.8's @ 155-159mph button shifting for most all of them. Never had a trans mechanical or shifting problem other than a set of worn shift forks.

I finally trashed the trans by WOT button shifting 5-6 at low-ish rpm testing the shifter.

Yup, i now now have a R&D bells n' whistles trans, but really don't feel i need it.
Call Mark at R&D and you will find yourself reaching for yr Visa card

Well, I'm sure you can get by with a stock trans until it fails (perhaps catastrophically)...but it's always better to be on the safe side.

I met a guy at the dragstrip who had a circlip pop out, and everything blew apart..I think it took the cases with it. I know that Scott had an ugly breakage, and I believe Pete's trans failed as well. Shiphteey also had an issue with the bike jumping out of gear/not shifting, if I recall. Even my trans had bad forks, a trashed gear, and bent shaft...and that was stock motor, no spray.

Yep that lil circlip got Buddy one time and it was my fault, i built his motor and reused the circlip, also didn't put the correct side facing the gear, and prob over-opened it when removing & replacing it. I learned my lesson.

Worn forks will cause all sorts of shifting issues, and surely lead to damage.
I doubt if a full R&D trans with with worn forks would act any better.

For LSR, I still maintain there is no need whatever on a 12 to have any non-OEM trans work done.

Drag racing... prob safer, like you say, to do a lil work, but just assuring that yr forks are spiffy is a must in any case.

(I like Frank!!! )

So that's what all that bench racing stuff is about huh? ;-)

And there's no doubt in my mind that you're in for a phenomenal season this year!

Very sorry to hear about that Dean, but like Todd said you'll be rocking.

When my tranny was stock I did not have any problems with it a couple years worth of Texas Mile events with a little 70 shot. First time the motor was pulled with around 14k miles some wearing on the shift forks.

I now have the works from Robinsons and luckily no tranny issues to date.

I got the motor half apart this afternoon, and lookie what I found in my oilpan! It's 4th gear! From the output shaft. Luckily I found a complete trans with clutch on eBay for $95 delivered. The cases look to be fine, no collateral damage as far as I can tell, but I'll have to see when they are apart. I feel very lucky.

holy sh!t! maybe you need some billet?

my trans issue was a lot of chipped gear dogs and trashed forks from missing the 1-2 shift.(17 51 makes you shift quick!) eventually it wouldnt stay in second gear, kept popping out under load. went with new forks, billet shift shafts(Brocks) and 1-4 output gears(Robinsons) and everything Mark(R&D) could do. about $1400. also added air shifter pieced together from various brands(about half the price of the muzzy system at the time). 08 and 09 no trans problems. thats priceless to me

Karl, what cams were you running to sneak in a 600cc bike rev?
