- Engine Building Tools? -

I may be looking to build an engine at some point in the future. I figured I would start a thread to get some ideas of the basic tools required. Outside of the basics, I would be interested in some of the tools that make the process less time-consuming and more precise.

This will give me a chance to shop around, or perhaps trade for the proper tools during my travels. Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

I'm still weighing my options. Most likely something conservative to start. I want to focus on strength and reliability rather than peak #'s. I haven't fully exploited the hp and speed potential of the stock motor yet.

I have the digital calipers covered:

It kind of sucks when you find that you need to measure something 6.73", and you only have a 6" caliper. It kind of makes you wish that you bought the 8" model to begin with.

Yeah, Canada doesn't like to receive magnetic things in the mail. I can ship the arm and the probes, but the base may be problematic. I can try shipping it in a separate container and just write it off if it gets bounced. I tested the magnetic field of the base with the switch in the OFF position (using my CRT monitor!), and the magnetic field seems to be pretty well contained in that state, so it should pass a magnetism field test. Are you still interested in the tools? They're just sitting on a shelf at the moment.

Scott - do you have a link to the thread where we went through this exercise for you, way back when? It's been a while, but I thought there might be some relevant info in there for Shane.

KZScott and tcchin pretty much have it covered. Do yourself a favor and buy good name brand torque wrenches. Snap-on, Mac, Matco, etc. Stay away from the harbour freight junk. Some of the stuff they sell is OK but I try and stay away from them when it comes to precision tools. YMMV.

I like to have a couple sets of V-blocks around to check runout on cams, etc.

It's also nice to have a smallish surface plate for lapping heads and cylinder blocks too.

Regarding a bore gauge, are you still using this one, Scott?:

yeah, i used that one for cases, rods ect. DO NOT try using it with cold parts or even in a cold room for that matter. i tried in dads shop. totally frustrating expirience. if you are doing this in the winter like me, bring the parts in the house for several hrs in a very warm room. the closer to body temp the better as your hands can heat up the parts and mess with readings. kitchen table with towels

Some info/pics posted regarding measuring rod bolt stretch:

Tcchin post:

I have a Lunati stretch gauge with a Mitutoyo 543-693 indicator on it.

Carrillo's instructions can be found here:

Osti post:

Karl,

This is the stretch gauge I have. It was about 150 bucks. I bought it at the time because it was the only one I could find that would read .0005" most only read .001". If I was going to do it again I would do like tcchin. The cheaper stretch gauge and spend the money on a real good indicator. Anyway, this is the one I use and it works fine. Can be purchased at Summit or Jegs or anyplace like that.

I believe that Entropy posted about a trick digital tool for this as well. Unfortunately I could not find that post. Perhaps Karl can point it out.
