Karl got the one from Dyer's Rods that is an ARP frame with a Mitutoyo gauge. It was something like $300 at the time.

Tim, how is it that the Mitutoyo mounts within the Lunati frame? Is there a set screw or something that allows for that, or does it require fabrication?

There are set screws on both ends of the frame that hold the indicator and the opposing extension in place. The beauty of the Lunati setup is that you can use any indicator you want because of the external spring configuration. Most of the other setups use specially-modified indicators with extra-stiff internal return springs, which renders then useless for any other purpose. Oh yeah, and the Lunati setup is only about $30.

everything that was mentioned.. i don't recall seeing anything for piston installation ( tho you don't NEED them, they're just nice to have).. also don't recall valve removal tools of any sort.
looking to just built, most of your basic and intermediate shit will work. lookng to modify, you'll get into seat cutting, stuff to remove metal.. shit like that.
i have a ridiculous amount of tools i've made myself for various things. some of them can onny be used on ONE bike, but i have it anyway.. i've made several diagnostic access tools for suzukis and just made one yesterday for kawasaki.. those make it nice should you fire a motor up and not get he desired reaction from it, or it won;t fire off at all. a bunch of the other things i can use on everything from dirtbikes to cars to boat to quads, and everything in between.
you'll find after a few buils, crafty ways to get around things.. some manuals call for special tools for holding all the pistons level when installing the cylinder block. soemtimes a long screwdriver or 1/4" extention will work for that.. sometimes, it won't. most times, i just offset the pistons and do 2 and 3 first, rotate the crank 90* then go to 1 and 4. not sure if thats how the pros do it, but it works for me and i've never had any issues with it.
lots of little things help on the build.. some stuff you might only use once in a great while.. a sync gauge for example, or pressure gauge to inspect oil or fuel pressure.
thats amout all i can think of for now. my mind is just elsewhere and i've had a bad day.

it is so much easier to put pistons on the rods, put them one at a time into the block, temporarily bolt block to upper case(cases must be split), flip upside down, put in crank, install rod caps, trans, bolt on lower case. flip over install head. i think its pretty much required to do it this way on the mono block/case tho.

Can anyone suggest a good dial indicator setup for measuring lift and such?

I use a double indicator setup that bolts above and across the cam towers with provisions for the indicators milled parallel to the intake and exhaust valves. There are big, circular pads that screw onto the end of the indicators to simulate tappets. It's the only way to measure cam timing and lift! The only drawback is that it reads 180 cam degrees (or 360 crank degrees) off, which is no big deal.

That looks like an awesome setup, but perhaps a little more complex/expensive than I was hoping for.
Is there something more universal that you guys are using, without custom machining?
