project 2 revisited (dads bike), bigger and badder :D

rebuild time for dads motor. still need a few things, but im getting a few things done so they are out of the way. the original head needs major repair so we opted to get a used one (long story) but it needs a bit of work, so I used mine in tonights mock up. using 3 "old" pistons purchased from 1290NOS when he parted his bike, and one new one. the motor has been punched out to 1287cc (commonly refered to as a 1290 kit) and the pistons are prepped for nitrous. the old ones were allready done and just needed cleaning, but i had to remove some material from the new one. the thin piece of material by the valve pockets has been ground down and all sharp edges have been rounded to prevent hot spots for safer running.

the bottom end of the motor checked out so i decided to check squish. knowing that the block had been surfaced, and Lee told me they would have to remove quite a bit, i decided to take a wild guess and go with 2 base gaskets (a stainless steel shim with a silicone like coating) and see where that ended up. one was in the motor last yr, and i removed mine from my motor(to tighten up squish), so i had a spare for free i used my used cometic 1287 headgasket (from my motor) as it will be getting a new one the same thickness on final assembly. using the crushed solder way to measure squish Karl taught me last yr

scott, nice pix!

Suggestion: next time you go squishin', place the F-B solder closer to the bore, you can get the entire piece squished.

thx guys, yeah i misjudged how big the quench pads (i think thats the name) are in the head, and didnt get a full crush. nearly missed #4 F as you can tell by the noticable piston rock(easier to crush a short piece than a long piece) . ill be placing the solder closer to the bore on later squishin' escapades. the L R ones didnt get crushed much either, but enough to fit in the mic. I dont even know how one would check L R on a stock bore 12? gets real easy with your 87mm bore eh Karl?

something i forgot to mention. damn its nice having a flat oil pan to work with! no blocks under the motor or any of that bs. nice solid base

L-R is a bit problematic on the offset block, but it is possible.

You really only need to get 1 cyl Q right if you are running Q= 40-ish and generous PTV, but i like to get all 4 and i like to see results which are predictable to .001" cause i run such tight clearances.

Yes indeed on the flat pan making bench building MUCH easier!!

will do Doc. we are changing the gearing a bit too so it has enough gear for a hit of giggle juice going from 16 56 to 17 56 (have an 18 if we need it). dads weight goal is also 235 unsuited vs 240 from last yr. we have the MTC springs to play with too that werent it it last yr. he wants it setup to run as a 5 speed on motor and a 6 speed on spray. with the wheelie bars, i think we can activate the dry shot right out of the hole. it takes a "second" to fully come on as it sprays in the ram air tubes for a "progressive like" hit. ET prediction with a 50 shot??

I guess I forgot about the head not being offset. i was thinking of the extra .5m on each side of the bore. I guess a SBM 87mm bore would be easier

I wanted to be sure on all 4 as 2 of the rods were resized last yr. I wasnt sure how much that was going to impact everything.

tonight I started working on the used stock head from JACKSHOW. I believe hes finally shipping the cam cap, so Im going to give the head a light porting/port match, some c chamber work, and thorough cleaning(lots of work ahead). took all the valves out, and started letting aluminum dust fly
not so nice background..

ports are a bit rough in stock form

one CC just about done

cool, i have an idea of what to try, but ill be giving you a call when its ready to go. 3.29 vs 3.25 pretty close gear ratio, but heavier driver and hopefully more power

btw i forgot to mention, speaking of cool....this is definately a winter project! for the usa guys, tonights temp was minus 36F not including wind chill...brrrr

another chilly night, minus 35 and it will keep getting colder till the sun peaks out. got some more progress done to the head. this is my 3rd go at doing a clean up/port match on a head, and the second one ive done CC mods to so im getting a bit faster i finished the combustion chambers, and got most of the first exh port done. the port really narrows in to match the restrictive stock header, but im opening it up to match the Muzzy sidewinder(id matches the id of the exh gasket). we dont like restrictions

Im waiting for my 38x12.5in tires to be mounted on the new rims for my Dakota (need to get the big boys back so i can cut fenders and finish up body work, so i had some time to get back to the bikes.

I finished up the porting, and tried my hand at lapping the head as per DragBike Zone guru(s) advice . i used a piece of 1/2 in lexan, wet dry sand papaer (600, then 400, then 600 again) oiled with WD-40. i tried the finer grit first instead of starting right off the bat with 400 as 600 was less likely to fukk things up on my first attempt. once i got a feel for it i switched to 400, then finished with 600.
Im still concearned with with the HG sealing though. there is a scratch/gouge from a smashed bucket (8 of 16 survived the trip)that happened during the shipping process that wasnt removed by the lapping so it may need to be surfaced anyway??
your opinions?

i also fixed the smashed corner. when i tried to bend it back to where it was supposed to be it broke off in 2 pieces. i would have prefered to have it tigged, but i used JB Weld and then shaped it a bit with the dremmel. it should look ok when painted

If you get pressure over to the scratch, the head gasket already let go.
Copper coat the head if you're worried. I wouldn't worry at all.
