tbbt,
I wouldn't have thought it's too much of a problem as long as your filter is sealed properly. I have driven cars in the desert and they used to get services every 500 miles.
Cheers!

I was getting dirt from around the access covers, also I coat the inside of the airbox with grease to help catch any dirt on its way through.

Ted - I was thinking the same thing. The gaskets on the airbox caps look almost flush on the cap. The effectiveness of the gaskets look a little suspect. So how did you resolve the access cover (caps) issue?

I took some silicone sealer and put a small bead around the edge of the cover( over the foam o-ring) after cleaning it with acetone. Then I put a thin coat of oil on the airbox where the covers come in contact (so the silicone wouldn't stick) and bolted it together very lightly. Let the silicone dry. Now the sealer stays with the covers and allows access without having to reseal each time.

tbbt,
yep, I got it too. It's not coming through the filter, it's ex-factory sandblasting grit material.
(Just got a new ZX12 and it was already there).
I cleaned it all out, and I'll be watching for more appearing.

Can you see this pic?

This is what I found inside my brand new bike's airbox. Look familiar?

You can see the sand easily where I've rubbed a finger through it.
Maybe this is one of the reasons that K increased the running-in period 'cos there had been failures?
