2004/2005 ZX-12 ECU Flashing
I finally got around to opening up the ECU I got off of eBay (Kawi Part# 21175-0038). As I suspected it is a first generation 32bit with a 7052 cpu.
What that means is that it is the same type as the 02-07 Hayabusa.
It can be flashed through the wire harness connectors. You do not need to cut any holes in the ECU.
It can be flashed with a $20 USB cable, not a $200 adapter like the 16bit ECUs
The flash program is available free from the chip maker, not a $179 like the 16bit ECUs
I'm downloading the maps now. I'll let you know if I find anything exciting.

Looks like typical Denso dual map setup with duplicate Ign, Fuel, and misc maps. Unlike the older 12s however it appears, at least on my bench, that you can switch maps real time. On the earlier 12s you had to turn the key off/on to change map sets.
If true this means newer 12 owners will be able to wire this into their nitrous set up and have automatic motor/nitrous ign/fuel map switching like the Busa guys have.
Also I noticed these 12s have an Air Switching Valve solenoid that is used on the exhaust air injection smog system. For those of you who have removed this system and put in place block off plates this solenoid drive channel would be available for other uses such as an RPM window switch or shift light.

No this is not Denso ETSI.
Since this is new to everyone let me cover some basics.
ECUs can have two types of programming modes. Boot Mode and User Mode.
When the ECUs are manufactured and the CPUs are installed they are totally blank. Boot Mode is used to program them and install the operating software. The Boot Mode software is burned into the CPU when it is manufactured.
User Mode consists of flash functions written into the operating software by the ECU manufacturer. Two ECUs designed with the same CPU, say one designed by Denso and the other Mitsubishi would have to different User Mode flash systems including passwords etc because the flash functions were written into the software by their designers, not the chip maker.
DENSO ETSI is a User Mode system. What we are doing to the 12 is a Boot Mode Flash.
Denso designed the ECU with all the necessary Boot Mode signals from the CPU present on the wire harness connectors. So we don't need to speak Denso to reflash it. In reality we are not reflashing a Denso ECU but the Renesas SH7052 inside of it.

So the boot side is a ROM and the flash side is like an EEPROM ? makes sense to me, so the plan is to download the current maps etc and then modify as required and reflash the unit in such making Power Commanders not needed for re-mapping. Got to be the way to go for the later ZX's also the fact you can do this from the existing wiring harness is a real bonus. I take it the Kleen air output could be used for driving virtually any device and programmed to switch when required ?. Maybe you could change the trip display into a gear indicator now that would be more useful.

Actually the Boot and User Mode flash the same EEPROM space. The difference is in where the software that does the flashing comes from. The Boot Mode flashing software is burned into the chip at the chip factory and can't ever be erased or changed. The user mode flashing functions are written by the ECU designers and installed at the ECU factory.
One advantage the Power Commanders have is real time tuning while the engine is running. You have to stop the motor to reflash the ECU. Given that fact and the huge user base and experienced Power Commander tuners I don't think we will make them obsolete anytime soon.
The instrument clusters have their own little computer and software inside. They are not just a display for the ECU. To change the trip meter would require reflashing the dash, not the ECU.

03 throttle bodies are different than 04-05
04-05 32 bit processor 03 still 16 bit I think
04-05 is a different harness
charging system is different in some aspects
might be more stuff

I can see that the "hacking" of the SH7052 chip is going strong...
http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?aBID=99460&p=3&topicID=14204808
I guess that the "programing through the ECU connector" part didn't go so well,
or maybe it got shifted over to the BUSA units...
If indeed it is actually possible for the BUSA 32bit ECU to be reflashed via the connector
I would guess that a simple pinout map indicating the coresponding pins on the ZX12 ECU
would be all that's needed to get one started on reflashing the Kawi SH7052....
Right?

Also what benefit would a casual rider make out of this modification.
My problem here is that i do not have a dyno here and the map is really off due to the climate and altitude. Can something be done to it?
