tool of the chinese propoganda machine.
If you don't believe it go back and try to go where you want when you want, the truth becomes evident real fast, there are 2 china's. the one you were allowed to visit and the other 90% of the country which you will never be allowed to visit. what is they hidding willus?child sweat shops, poverty, totaltarian rule, torture, etc.

Was a good article fish, shows to what lengths the commies will go to convince the west that they are just misconceived

Another amazing write up fish_antlers..

The only thing I can suggest is stop being shy in front of the camera.
No but really I would like to see you pound a couple of brewskis and grab that camera and walk around and talk to people.
I bet you that would be a riot to watch!
Like I said again amazing job on the write up ..

I kind of figured as I was reading that you would mention something about the food.lol..

Mitsubishi incorporation opened a turbine engine company in Orlando, Florida and sent all of their welders to Japan.
Well needless to say 9/11 hit at the same time as everybody was over there receiving their certifications so it was an extended stay.
Everybody got totally sick trying to adjust to their new digestive tract..

I see you can't go anywhere without your groupies tagging along..

dunno about that ozzy... I wasn;t directed or lead anywhere... there were literally no limitations put on me with regards to who I could talk to or about what, or where and what I could do... I'm serious about that...

it's a different world than what our news leads us to believe, and I was there and saw it with my own eyes.

Co-worker has went to Bejing China twice ,this summer and also to the Olympics, both times as a tourist.

I take what he told me at face value, he has no reason to lie about his experiances there.

Each day his guide would pick him and his party up at the hotel they were staying in and drive them to see different sites.
No matter where they were going to go, the always went the same direction, then if needed swtched back to the correct direction. After a few days of this he asked why and the reply was the guberment does not want tou
rist to see the prison on the next street over and will revoke the tour guides liscense if he were to take them on that route.
Jim said many areas were restricted, things like neighbor hoods and such. The driver was not allowed to drive them into.
Much is hidden from the outsiders. The guberment knows they need to put on a good face and hide the truth of life from us.

ya.. but I was traveling there on a different visa, NOT a tourists visa.... consider it an "all access pass" if you will... a friend of mine was in Beijing last summer and was made to sign an agreement that he would not photogprph or video tape anything while he was there...

all I can tell you is my experience, which is 100% opposite of your story... there were NO restrictions placed on me whatsoever...

I do need to point out (as the article states) that it did take over a month for them to authorize the visa (which is pretty cool looking) ... but I guess it got me carte blanche so it was worth it...

so again - shit may have been hidden from your friend, but I can assure you that it wasnt from me... I saw my share of poverty, open public drunkenness etc... traveled through good an bad neighborhoods... really no different than the USA... so you know your friend Jim, but you also know me... and you know that I had a different experience, plus I was given a considerably different level of access.

Yr friend had a bad guide.

I've seen no restrictions whatsoever to traveling by taxi anywhere.

My company, Chevron, has a buncha operations in China, and we use Chinese vendors routinely. Our employees and contract inspectors travel all over the place, whole buncha employees living there.

I am sure that military or industrial areas with restrictions exist, but we go where we wanna go, when we wanna go there. Simply grab a cab.

Language is an issue, chinese characters are a pita to deal with.
best to get an english speaking floozy, have her help you out with logistics, then blow you when you are in the mood.

I have yet to meet a Cinaman who wants to "bury me", they all seem to want to eat well, drink well, party, just like us.

BTW: Visa
In houston we just go to the Chinese consulate, get a tourist visa on the spot.

also, a friend i was traveling with discovered (we had arrived in Hong Kong) he had an expired Chinese Visa; it only held him up 3-4 hours to get his visa at the HK airport.
We, being the assholes we are. abandonned him and flew on to Beijing, he caught up with us later.

Its quite possible and even very likely that things were very different during the Olympics.

We do know that they had to shut down the industries within Beijing to try and reduce the air pollution to tolerable levels.
They didn't allow the locals to drive around much to try and reduce the traffic congestion.

So I'm sure there were other special "rules" in place during the Olympics as well.

I know several people that go there on a regular basis for business and they all say the local people are very nice.

Anyway, nice write up Fish.

that was great article and i would love to have the opportunity you had one day but in the same breath i'll say my sister spent a semester in central china last year and she said there are definetly two sides of china much like ozzy described. she said in urban areas and at university you would never know it but after making freinds and hearing about what really goes on she couldn't wait to get back home

also wondering if Ozzy's friends experience had more to do with his translator perhaps "lining his own pockets" ... had a similar experience on one of many trips to mexico ... guide kept taking us the same places all the time - found out later he was getting a kickback for all the tourists he took certain places...

my experience is in line with what entropy is stating.
