Is BMC air filter better than K&N for the ZX12R.
Do they make more power.

BMC Filter

All I can say is my 2K 12 w/PCiiir, BMC air filter, and full Akra beat all comers @ the last Dyno shootout @ Cycle Barn. There were many other 12s and Busas, a couple of the 12s were running K@Ns with full Muzzy systems. My bike made about 4 HP more with the BMC over the stock filter. I believe the BMCs are better made, and fit better.

The K&Ns seem to work pretty well. The fit is OK, getting them out is a trick. I end up using a screw driver, do some prying and pop they come up and out. I do get a kick out of the four bolts that Kawi put in to hold the filters in place. Where in the hell would the filters go? Are they going to levitate the gas tank?

I use a couple of zip ties and call it good. The zip ties help to secure the gas tank prop rod.

The BMC may be your only option. K&N has stopped production of filters for the 12.

Which?? BMC Filter do you have Street or Race! Ferrari Uses BMC Only for their F-1 and road cars! I have K&N, because I could wait no longer got the BMC's to come out! This is not the first time that I have heard that K&N have stopped making ZX12R Filters! Since When and WHY??

You could aways do the "Motorhead Filters". I think it was close to a year after the 12R came out before K&N started selling their's. Since I couldn't wait for aftermarket filters, Dennis offered to "make" me some. To do it though, he had to have my OEM filters. Actually, he was doing an experiment on what difference just a filter change would make on the 12R. His "tests" concluded that by just having less restrictive filters, the '00 showed a gain of 3.5 HP and a little over 3 ft/lbs.

After he was through testing my "new" filters, he send them back to me. What was the difference? Basically, he completely gutted the OEM filters to the frame. The he took two layers of UNI pre-filter foam and glued them into the OEM frames. After that, he just sprayed them with K&N filter oil.

When I first saw them, I was both scared and pissed. They didn't look like they'd filter out anything smaller then a damn bluejay. I was wrong. After 34,000+ miles of using these filters, I have just one problem with them and it wasn't their ability to filter, either. It was after 20K miles, the glue had come loose in one corner, of one layer of foam, on one of the filters. That's it.

I have done several "experiments" of my own to see if dirt, dust or just general road crap is getting through the filters and into my airbox. I can proudly say that they do actually work. When others had complained of even the OEM filters letting crap get by and into the airbox, I have never had such a problem.

The only down side is that I've always just used gasoline to clean my filters. Needless to say, I have now learned that prolonged exposure (like "soaking") in gas, is kinda hard on the glue (DUH!). Since then, I clean them in a "proper" manner, let them dry, re-oil them and stick 'em back in.

I know it sounds like BS, but I swear that they actually work. Now, I also must make this "disclaimer". I do not, ride in urban or surburban areas. Only on back highways that are fairly clean. No dirt or gravel roads and I try to avoid rain as mush as possible. The rain doesn't seem to bother them, though. They're pretty good at keeping the moisture out as well, even with the resonators removed.

I've seen the K&N's and the BMC's and I'd have to say the BMC's are made better.

The frame is much stronger on the BMC's and they have handles moulded in for easy removal without using any straps or screwdrivers to pry them out.
I saw a few K&N's that were damaged from someone trying to get them out.

I wouldnt doubt that K&N is redesigning the zx12r filters to make them stronger and easier to remove. If they do this then they would be just as good I guess.

The BMC's are more expensive thou at $120+

Correction

In my previous post I incorrectly stated that K&Ns were better made. I agree that BMC's race filter is better made and stronger....
