Canister or Header?

I have a Ti header and a CF canister.

Hey redelk...

Does the Carbon Fiber peel off or lose its luster after so long? Do you take a lot of precautions toward your exhaust so the Carbon Fiber looks like the day you bought it?

stock

my entire bike is stock and I have absolutely no intention of changing it....unless I move back to virginia, then I would lose my license in about a week, so then i will make it a drag bike.

Oooooooooo... don't get me started!

Well some would think I'm either lying or real damn lucky. Why? You asked....

1. I have over 31K miles on my Muzzy CF canister.

2. I have had two dyno runs (7 pulls) and didn't remove the fairings or take any other of the RECOMMENDED precautions.

3. For almost 10K of those 31K+ miles, the total amount of packing was smaller then your fist. Not recommended.

4. For about 5K of those miles, I used dirtbike silencer fiberglass packing. Also not recommended and smelt like cat piss anyway.

5. When repacking, I have not used any form of "hi-temp" silicon on the endcaps. Also... not recommended.

6. On TWO separate occasions, while rev'ing the bike on the race stands, the Ti header got SO HOT, it actually set the heat tape inside the lower fairing on FIRE (twice) and melted a small portion of the lower (once).

I really rather not go into the "reasons" I was doing this. Also... you guessed it... HIGHLY not recommended.

6. ONLY "care & maintenance" I have done is to wipe the road grit off with Windex and shine it with Plexius after every ride.

The results? After 2+ years and 31K+ miles of Red Elk ignorance, stupidity and unintentional abuse...

1. The riveted nameplate came off somewhere around 26K miles. Actually it came off on just one side. I just tore and snipped it off the other rivet. I used a black "Sharpie" on the rivets.

2. The answer to your question (FINALLY!), there has been NO delamination or peeling, NO cracking and NO discoloration. NONE! NADA! ZIP! There might actually be some discoloration, but it has been so gradual over the past 2+ years, I've never noticed it. The surface does feel a tad "drier", but that's it.

Don't use any crazy solvents on the CF would be my advice and keep it properly packed. It will last and look great!

Don't use any highly abrasive cleaner, like a road, to clean it and it will last long and look great.

My brother just put a carbon Akropovic on yesterday. They suggest repacking every 15,000 miles (or 40 hrs. if you have the race version) to keep the carbon from overheating and peeling. I personally just took the stock off my 12 and punched out all the guts I could reach with a 1/2 inch drill and 12 inch extention. Sounds much better. Hard work though. I am new here by the way so Hello.

redelk I'm glad (well kinda) to hear that I'm not the only one that has had their bike on fire. Now it's kinda funny but at the time the bike was on the dyno and had some pretty good flames when the heat tape and the fairing was on fire. Oh yea Muzzys Ti pipe on the bike.

So far, according to the poll, stainless steel isnt as popular as the others. Any reason for that?

Both times were so stupid...

they are harlariously funny (even to me). Still too embarassed to go into the details, but I'll give you a couple of "teasers" until I can get up the guts to tell the whole story (publicly).

1. Both times, the bike was on racestands in my garage. Nothing "glorious" like doing a dyno run.

2. (This is one of the "funny" parts) In the first case, well... let's just say that the bike was in gear. Uhhhhhhh... a kinda "high" gear. Okay... OKAY DAMN IT! It was WFO in sixth!

That's ALL I'll say, for now.
