from the way the exhaust ports protrude outward from the head and the location of the distributor, I would guess it's a pontiac

Ding Ding... Yep, its a Pontiac. The ultra rare RamAir V 400 engine for the 69-1/2 GTO.
But it got the axe for political reasons and was only sold over the counter for $2000 bucks complete ready to run.
I've heard there was only about 80 sold. They made it in 303 CI for T/A racing and 400 CI for the production 69 GTO and a 428 version for dragracing. I always felt the 455 would have been the best engine for these heads. The ports were actually very oversized and it would have been a good matchup.
My buddy is building if for a customer. I wonder what a properly done 69 or 70 GTO with one of these engines would sell for at the Barrett Jackson auction.
I'll post some dyno charts when its done. Rumors are... this engine can make 550 hp.
Not bad for a stock engine slated for production in 1969-1/2.
In a firebird it would have had the insurance companies sleeping out in DC on the steps.
So there is no original RA V cars. What a shame.
Anyway, just thought I'd post somthing you dont see very often.

Never seen a ponco motor with tunnel ports heads but there they are in living color.. ..I know ford had some 427 tunnel port heads for NASCAR ....Guys at PMD must have been thinking the same thing...I bet them heads would bring some good money !!!!

wow never heard of that one. had a friend with RA IV gto judge. found a good article about that engine, it shows pics and that block you showed is deffinately it with the angled bracing in the lifter galley, but if you look at the pics on this link http://www.wallaceracing.com/rav-story2.html the shape of combustion chamber is very different, however they did discuss the large round intake ports with the intake valve tube running through the middle of the port. I knew earlier that those were racing heads because I'd never seen poncho heads (and I've seen most of them) with round ports but have seen other nascar heads with them. very cool btw, thanks for posting the pics.

Smokin, I'm not sure but i do believe Ford's tunnel port heads came out a year or so earlier.
H2, theres a few inaccuracies in that article http://www.wallaceracing.com/rav-story2.html you posted a link to.
Those heads have the small combustion chambers. So that makes them for the small 303 C.I. Trans Am engine. They were NOT used on the 400 for drag racing. The 303 would be a pig for drag racing becasue it had little torque and needed to stay at or around 8000 rpm to make power. Also much of the valvetrain components in the bigger RA V heads used stock RA IV stuff. They also used a cross ram with dual quads for the 303 in T/A racing. They made about a dozen different intake manifolds at least for this engine.
I think that article is a bit dated and was written with the infirmation available at the time.
I'm sure if one looked hard enough you could find some info on the net about the RA V engine. I'll take some pics of it completed and maybe a clip of it on the dyno that would give any GTO fan wood.
Mike, yep, good old american iron.
Bill does a lot of original Boss 302,429, and SCJ 428, 427 for stuff as well for a company that restors original rare mustangs to 100% factory. He does a few dozen a year of these rare numbers matching stuff.
He also does tons of extremely rare Chevy engines for another guy, like original L-89 and L-88 engines as well as ZL-1 engines etc. If anyone out there needs an original 427/435hp, 425hp,400hp,390 hp etc engine let me know. I can deliver one to your door with the correct date coded parts for just about any year you need. This guy has THE LARGEST stock pile of rare chevy engines in the world.

makes sense about the smaller combustion chambers. That story looks to be period piece and we all know that authors aren't always interested in the "minor" details lol. Looking forward to those pics, snap some of the 429 boss while your at it. I'm not a big ford fan, but back in high school the wealthy
kids drove all the great muscle and there was a group of them drving boss 429 stangs, torinos, and a cougar eliminator. The '69 or '70 mustang was unbeaten. The guy was slick too, he always sandbaged and never beat anyone by more than a couple car lengths. the other wicked fast cars around at that time were a '69 427 L88 phase 3 nova, a '68 GTX 440 (2-4's), and a '66 hemi charger (not stock) with a straight front axle. Ah the good old days.
somehow this second golden age of muscle, that we are in, just doesn't get me that excited

I'm into the newer stuff too. It is much different thou. Tuning? Well you dont even get your hands dirty. Dropping the check balls in the speedy dry when your doing a shift kit? not anymore. You just click away on the lap top and it shifts just how you want it to.
Both are about 435 RWHP +/- 10 hp. Thats 500+ on an engine dyno.
This is the wifes car... old school. ZZ502/tko600 5 speed.
This is my car...
LS-1/procharger 8 lbs. boost, twin air to air after coolers.
Were gonna line them up this spring for pinks winner takes all.

Nice, I'll take the wife's car lol. I've got a '70 442 convertible #'s 455 ramair. I did a frame off (myself) a couple years ago. It's aegean aqua/white stripes and a peal interior. what's nice about the olds A bodies is that most of them had quite a few options, mine has them all including cruise, tilt, ac, fact gauges, hurst dulagate, power win, locks, trunk, seat, seat back release. I added rear discs, fact 8-track, headlite delay, and a bowtie overdrives 200R4 (600hp version). bad news is it has to go this spring to raise $$$ to finish the montain home.

It'll be in the neighborhood of $35k. It's a shame really, if you could find an SS 454 chevelle convert. with 1/3 of the options (chevy's are lucky to have ac) totally restored it would bring about $75k-$100K.

Great looking rides Jim. That is a good looking wheel in the lower right corner of the first pic. It looks fast.
