ZX14......The real deal.

Just got in from Maxton with good news for Kawasaki. The 14 is the fastest production bike ever built!
On the way over we stopped by Coby Adams shop where him and Cory was safety wiring a brand new blue ZX14. They replaced the 17 tooth countersprocket with a 18 and strapped it on the dyno with 24 miles on the odometer, the dyno showed 200mph with no hit from the top-end limiter, apparently the 18 fooled it. We removed the mirrors which is mandatory and lowered the bike using stock adjustments and put it on the trailer with the break in oil still in the engine.

After registration and tech we added two gallons of spec fuel, Sunoco pump gas and the tank was sealed. I made a shakedown/break-in pass of 182.41mph on a 180.09 production record. Not too bad considering the first sanctioned timing event since the release of the 14 and it set a national record on it's first pass and I was doing it at 215 pounds suited up.

Chad was busy riding Don Smiths ZX10R that Sport Rider magazine is doing an article on, he ended up running 197 on motor and 203 on nitrous on the 10 for some new records. I went ahead and made a few more passes just to put some miles on the motor, getting it ready for Chad. I ended up running 187.3 and 187.4mph but the gearing was too tall for me and we had no other sprockets. I was only turning 10,200 through the lights, way too low.

Chad ended up running several 194 and 195's with a best of 196.1mph This was on Sunday in the heat of the day with humid conditions, it had rained earlier in the morning.

We both came away highly impressed. The bike is so smooth and quiet, even at high speeds. The stability was great even during some Saturday passes with crosswinds.
We dropped the bike off with 62 miles on the clock with full belief of knowing that with a gearing change and an engine full of synthetic oil, 200mph is possible on a complete stock motorcycle. Remember folks, this is a standing start one mile run so the top speed is not reached.

All of a sudden my 12 feels old and dated but I still love it!

Thanks Kawasaki for building the 14.........You done good!
Dan

Does the 14 come with a Steering Dampener? The 100 pounds difference between you and your son are a lot!

Jim,
Zack could not get off work & we hated it. Him and Chad usually run the same numbers no matter what they're on.

Vincent,
No factory dampner, we borrowed the Scotts unit from Rickey Gadsons ZX14 racebike.

Good to hear from you Mark.........Hope you're all doing good.
Dan

The aero's are working really well on this bike. This beats Doug M 192.307 by about 4 mph good stuff

Ive bounced my stock zx14 off 300 km on the speedo several times now.
Pegging it on the limiter I imagine.
Slight movement when running into crosswinds, but freight train stable with no wind or wind from the rear.

Very impressive machine !

Good job Dan.
Just wait till you see what it'll pull with a pipe.
Another 20 rwhp to be had right into the rev limiter!

Oh yeah after some constant pulls in top gear from 50 -90 mph, approximatley 150 miles worth the motor loosened right up. BIG power difference after 150 miles break in!

Decent. Should easily break 200 with a pipe and gearing, I'm guessing 205 is possible, N/A. Throw a simple $250 dry kit on it and you're looking at 210-215 mph, possibly 220mph with a twin nozzle setup like I have on my 1290 bike. All for less than building a 1290 or 1361 on a ZX12 platform.

so do you think the zx14 limiter is based on 6th gear position sensor and red line rpm.if so then when the bike red lines any taller gearing in 6th gear will it fall on it's face till rpm drops below threshold in 6th gear?

I think it takes countershaft sprocket speed.
Runs off the speedo signal I imagine,
I'll have to pull another run to check out rpm. Not 100% sure but think it was around 10.5 RPM at 300k / 186 mph.... stock gearing.
Did not look down at the tach at 300 kph... how bout you Dan?

The coolest part for me is how effortlessly it pulls to 180mph with stock gearing!

Doug Meyer used the stock 18/46 for his 192.307 mph run.. He backed it up with a 199.1 with only a muzzy exhaust..

I don't think you can put a 19 sprocket on a 12r. But who knows..
As far as gearing 18/46 is 2.55 to 1 for a mathematical of about 201.875
so 19/46 is 2.42 to 1 which is taller than 2.55 to 1 so its over 204 mph gearing.

mathematical top speed doesnt translate to actual top speed anywhere except on a dyno.

18/46 will not put you over 200mph at maxton.

I used STOCK 18/46 gearing on my 2000 12 and went 196 mph (GPS and Radar Verified).

I was using a Muzzy Pipe and map at the time. Everything else was stock.

Sprocket Specialists said it will be months.
