Repacking muzzy exh. for h.p
A friend of mine told me that you can send your muzzy can in for re-packing & you can have them put something in there to help with bottom end,but you will lose a couple of h.p up top???.
Does anybody know what they do when they do this procedure.
What is done inside?How much top-end is lost & does it really help bottom.I think he said it was around $65.00 for the repack and $10.00 for shipping.Is it a noticeable mod or just one of those trial and error?.

You can do if yourself. If your muffler has rivets, obviously they will have to be drilled out. If you have allen screws, the job is simple!
Either way, simply remove the outside muffler cap, pull the perforated core out and rewrap with the new packing. You can also purchase it locally at a motorcycle shop that sells dirtbike accessories. All the packing is, is fiberglass.

Mach, I think your friend is talking about two different things. First, packing is only to give back your canister its sound absorbing and noise lowering properties. Second, Muzzy is also selling (and installing for about $65.00) what they call a quiet core. This is a cone shaped steel part that is installed inside your actual Muzzy baffle. Like its name implies, the purpose of this quiet core is to still lower the noise level for those wanting a lower profile exhaust. However, one consequence of this quiet core is a bit more restriction, a bit more back pressure, a bit less HP on top and a bit more HP in the midrange. I don't know the numbers however (HP or dB). Muzzy is probably the best place to get those numbers. Hope this helps. (NOTE: all this is true for a ZX11 and I assume it also hold for a ZX12R).

mach111 - What your referring to is a more restrictive baffle. Yes it will help with the low end stumble and yes it will effect the HP. This stumble is somewhat hereditary to reducing the back-pressure with an exhaust. Some 12 owners will tell you that Muzzys is the only pipe that causes looping and/or stumble. I've seen almost all brands of pipes (Including Akro) do the same thing to the 12. Also many other bikes suffer from the same stumble, including the busa. This condition can be tuned out to a point where it's acceptable/bearable. Several things can be done to achieve this. Before you change the baffle, first check the voltage on your TPS (Make sure it's at the manufactures recommended setting) while it's running at 1000 RPM, then turn the idle up to approx. 12/13 hundred RPM, until the idle smoothes. It may still loop a hundred RPM, no big deal, to me it actually sounds cool. Bringing the idle up helps to come out of 1st easier. Adding some timing also helps. Usually 2.5 to 5 degrees usually helps. With the PC3R you add the timing exactly where you need it and still be able to back off the timing up top. With the use of a dyno, you can get the best results. Having the air/fuel ratio checked with a sniffer and remapping may help. You can also play with the map using a laptop (increasing or decreasing fuel at the specific RPM). Increasing the gear ratio helps also, 17/46 or 16/44 are very popular and work well. The 16/44 gives you some valuable wheelbase also. If you are mechanically inclined, degreeing the cams may also help. Try some of these things and see what happens, just remember what's below 3K RPMs doesn't really matter.

I called Muzzys the other day and Dave quoted me 58 bucks to weld in the quiet baffle. Fast turn around too. Even though I use every bit of power the 12 has to offer (coughbullshitcough) I think the quiet can is for me.

You'll loose about 5 hp on top with the quiet core.
Turbo, The fiberglass packing material that you buy in bulk is primarily designed for MX bikes. Any thing with over about 120 hp will destroy it in about 10 hours. We use an imported ceramic packing that is designed for hi temp automotive applications.
BTW,
We've proven to ourselves over and over that the best performance (highest power) is always with the tightest (hence-quietist) packing.

vs. a pipe with a fresh tight repack.

Take it from someone (who's name we won't mention... but his initials are R.E.) who know the results of using MX bike fiberglas packing.... DON'T DO IT! Not only does it smell like piss (as it is burning up in your canister), but it can easily affect how you bike runs!
Of course, I.... uh hum... I mean this unnamed individual, got more then 10 hours of life out of his packing. It might have something to do with the fact that he used TWO to THREE packages of MX bike packing.
