An idea for Gap III???
Hey guys, i was thinking about things to do and roads to ride for Gap III and I had an idea. I won't say if it's a good one or not, I'll leave that up for discussion amoung those who will be coming..but here it is....
I don't know if anyone knows it, but Jamie James ( Former AMA superbike champion) has a really nice resteraunt called "The French Quarter" in Asheville, NC. It serves New Orleans style food (Duh!). It has indoor and outdoor seating too. I have eaten there and not only was the food really good, but when Jamie saw 3 of us pull into the lot on sportbikes, he came out to greet us personally and then came around to our table to talk during dinner. He didn't do this to any other tables, I think maybe he likes it when bikers come by and recognize him for who he is.Most of the locals don't have a clue, they just think it'sa nice resteraunt.
Anyway, Asheville is only 1.5 to 2 hours ride east on the Blue Ridge Parkway ( a really nice road. Think of the foothill parkway but over 400 miles long and will a lot of elevation changes).
I bet if we called ahead to let him know that a group of us was coming for dinner, her would reserve some tables outside for us and be sure to meet us and spend some time talking to us. Oh...and did I meantion that the food is really good ?
What do you guys think? we could go there for dinner around 5 or 6 one evening and still have plenty of time to make it back to Alcoa before dark.
Just a suggestion.

Wifey and I are heading down a week early. This is already on the list so we're game. Definately a destination. Plus Jamie prolly has some good suggestions as to roads to ride. (Wish I could find one of those replica helmets with the crawfish on it )

I am pretty familliar with the roads around Asheville myself from going to the Honda Hoot every year. But I have a good friend who is a local and knows every square inch of the area. I'll let him know when we are coming and hopefully he can meet us and show us some nice roads. One really nice one that I know of is a trip from Asheville through a canyon, past Chimey Rock to Lake Lure. Right at the edge of the lake is a motorcycle bar and gathering point called Margaritaville. On any given weekend, there will usually be 100 or more bikes of all types there. Or town mountain road to the Blue Ridge Parkway is another not to be missed. Nearly all the manufactures used it as a route for thier demo rides during the Hoot when it was in Asheville. I'm sure there are more too. It should be fun.

DOes anybody have a suggetion as to which day would be a good one to go to Asheville? It would be best to know ahead of time so we could get in touch with Jamie at his resteraunt and my friend who lives in the area to show us some roads.

Not that I'm "in charge" ...
... or anything like that, but it looks like "a plan" for Friday night to me. What is the distance from the hotel to Jamie's place? What time would everyone want to take off from the hotel (the logical departure point)? Odds are there going to be somewhere around 15~20+ of us going. I think some of us "early birds" should scout it out, what do ya'll think?

We can firm it up once we're there, after we find the best route and travel time. I may be able to get some of the ZRX bunch to meet us there or ride with us, if your interested.

BRP.....
The Blue Ridge Parkway is pretty awesome. I've rode it all the way up to Mount Michell, or is it Mitchell. Anyways it's a Foothills Parkway "style" road with gobs of beautiful scenery. I have ridden it and stopped off in Maggie Valley for grub and stuff. Not a hardcore road though, it's federal, and there will more than likely be some "Boys" patroling. Still an excellent ride with beautiful scenery. It's a pretty good ride from Alcoa to Cherokee though, which is where the parkway starts, or ends????

It looks like about 150+ mile (one way) trip. Is the following a possible route? Half of it would be on the Blue Ridge Parkway (about 75 miles - one way).
129 to 321 at Marysville
321 to 73 at Townsend
73 to 441 south of Gatlinburg
441 to 2 (Blue Ridge Parkway) north of Cherokee
2 to 70 at Asheville (Highest point of 6047' at marker 425)
70 to State St. at Black Mountain
Gas stops and "smoke breaks" (Elk Pasture Gap, anyone?) might also be needed to be factored in. Cherokee might be our "last chance" for gas before we get to Asheville. Mt. Pisgah close to marker 410 (Highway 70 is close to marker 383), but who know what kind of gas station they have there.

Ballisticzx12r, you DO KNOW that you, bfly and any other of the "early ninjas" will have to join me in doing a scouting mission to Jamie's place BEFORE the rest of the group gets there... don't you?
